Jackie Earle Haley is Officially Freddy in Elm Street Remake

A Nightmare on Elm Street (Remake, 2010) Movie, Featured, Horror Movie News — By Nix on April 5, 2009 |

When we last heard about the possibility of Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach from “Watchmen”) playing Freddy Krueger in the Platinum Dunes reboot of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, he sounded a tad noncommittal. In fact, he seemed to be leaning towards avoiding the character. Apparently ol Rorschach was just joshin’, because the trades have now made it official: Rorschach is Freddy!

The news come courtesy of Variety, who reports that with shooting on the Samuel Bayer-directed (and Wesley Strick-scripted) remake set to commence in Chicago next month, the Platinum Dunes people have nabbed their new Freddy, and he is Jackie Earle Haley as has been rumored/desired by the fanboy community for a while now. Apparently Michael Bay and the Dunes boys feel the same way.

The role is most famously associated with Robert Englund, who has played the disfigured knives-wielding killer in all the previous “A Nightmare on Elm Street” movies since the 1984 original. Over the years, the role went from scary to pun-heavy, with Freddy delivering cheesy one-liners before and after each one of his increasingly ridiculous kills. The whole thing came to a head in “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare”, when Freddy had to fight his own daughter. I shit you not. Word is, Englund will have a cameo in the remake as a psychiatrist.

Wes Craven, the franchise’s original creator, tried to revive the scary elements of his original (as well as the franchise) with “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare”, and although that installment was indeed much scarier than the previous installments, it failed to revive the series.

The “Nightmare on Elm Street” reboot is from the same people who gave you the “Friday the 13th” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reboots. Just call them The Horror Reboot People.

Below: Gee, I wonder why “Freddy’s Dead” wasn’t a hit with the kids. Could it have been the flying dream demon thingies?

A New Nightmare movie without Robert Englund wouldn’t be the same, I mean Jason & Micheal Myers is understandable cause’ they wear masks, but replacing Robert it wouldn’t be A Freddy movie without him, cause he makes the character, he is Freddy Krueger,

I agree 100%. I know I’m not the only Nightmare/Freddy fan who will be watching this new movie and the ‘new’ Freddy VERY closely. Cause I know the fans are not gonna be happy if we think that this new guy didn’t do Freddy/Robert Englund justice. I also want to add that, in the years to come. It wont be Jackie Earle Haley people will think of when they even mention the name Freddy Krueger. It will be Robert Englund who will ALWAYS be remembered as Freddy Krueger.

I agree!! A New movie without Robert Englund would be crazy. I have watched Nightmare on Elm Strret movies since I was little. I am a hug fan. I was so excited to hear that another one was being made. I just can’t figure out how they can replace a legend.

I AGREE.. IT WONT BE THE SAME WITHOUT ROBERT ENGLUND HE HAS BEEN IN EVERY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SINCE THE BEGINNING AND ALL THE TRUE “NOES” FANS WILL BE LET DOWN, YOU CANT REPLACE SOME ONE WHO PLAYED A ROLE SO PERFECTLY.. HE HAD THE PERSONA, CHARACTER AND ATTITUDE… REPLACING ROBERT ENGLUND IS LIKE TAKING AWAY SANTA FROM CHRISTMAS.. YOU CAN REPLACE HIM BUT IT WILL NEVERBE THE SAME.. ITS IMMORAL!!!!!!…..IT DOESNT MATTER IF THIS GUY IS A GOOD ACTER.. ACING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOLLOWING IN ROBERT ENGLUNDS SHOES…. ITS IMPOSSIBLE!!! I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS I DEFINATLY WONT BE SPENDING MY MONEY AT THE THEATRES FOR THIS!!

I understand where all you guys are coming from in relation to robert englund being a legend and an excellent freddy. However this is a remake of the movie and having robert englund play the character would not be a good idea the character of freddy really needs a new interpretation in order to have the same momentous fear impact of the original. my reasons for this are simple this movie should simply be solo in the franchise and should be rated seperately from the other movies, its stand alone and personally i think it will be scarier this time round as towards the end of the series it became a little comedic. I am excited about the new movie and will be going to see it comments are very appreciated.

  • LEEANN says:

I WILL NOT GO SEE THE NIGHT MARE ON ELM STREET REMAKE IT SOULD NOT BE REMADE MICHEL BAY IS SO STUPED ROBERT ENGLUND IS AND ALLWAYS WILL BE FREDDY KRUEGER IF YOU ASK ME THAY SOULD STOP THE RE MAKE ANDDO A NEW NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET MOVIE AND HAVE ROBERT ENGLUND AS FREDDY THEWAY IT SOULD BE

  • Waylo says:

You guys are crazy. Saying that Freddy will always be Robert Englund is like saying that Batman will always be Michael Keaton. Give it a chance. You should care more about the character of Freddy than the person playing him.

  • DrDrew says:

JEH is a great actor, give him a shot (remember the bad news bears from the 70″s, he was the tough kid with the motorcycle LOL)he was nominated for an oscar for Little Children. I like England too. He wasn’t the problem,
they started making them silly not scary. They screwed The Evil Dead movies up like that, the first was reallllllly scary.

    • Dedpool378 says:

His Rorschach in Watchmen was one if not the best thing about the film and I’m sure he’ll be great as Freddy. Maybe even scary.

  • Paul Williams says:

well first of all your right it wont be the same without Robert however i don’t think they should have made one of these anyways cause i watched them a while back and never new what it was pertaining to i new it was a horror movie but i thought it was basically a movie about the boogie man until just recently i noticed and found out that this whole movie was based on a child molester that was burned by the parents witch i think is discusting reason being is i think all child molesters should be killed anyways so this movie they should have made it like just a horror flick not one based on a child molester that comes back and kills people pretty messed up if u ask me

    • Dedpool says:

Well don’t know how you missed it. It was a major plot point of the character, and they even built on it making him “the son of a thousand maniacs” having his Nun mother get trapped with a bunch of inmates at an asylum and be raped. They basically created a character who was just inherently evil in what he was and that his death made it worse. I agree with you about child molesters, but saying the movie shouldn’t have been made because of the character isn’t exactly fair. Ignoring that people like that exist is far worse. It’s not as if they’re glorifying what he did, far from it, hell it gives the parents justification in burning him do death. But it’s never been shown what he did other than the mutlitation. Now that I think of it they refer to him as a child murderer more than molester. But again Robert Englund to me became too campy and lost alot of what made the character scary.
