James Mangold Confirms Secret Cameo Appearance at the End of The Wolverine

James Mangold, the director of this summer’s “The Wolverine”, recently sat down to talk about the movie with Entertainment Weekly (via Empire), and the director pretty much confirms a previously reported secret cameo appearance by someone familiar to the “X-Men” universe. No, not Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey. She’s been all over the trailers, so there’s nothing new there.

But first, what’s the deal with Jean Grey? Is she just going to show up in flashbacks? Apparently it’s a much more substantial role than previously thought, at least according to Mangold (and I presume he would know, being the director and all):

[Jean Grey] pops up to mock, comfort and advise Logan much as Number 6 tortured Gaius Baltar [in Battlestar Galactica].

So not just a cameo, then?

Patrick Stewart as Professor XMeanwhile, onto that secret cameo appearance. Yes, Mangold confirms, Professor X (aka Patrick Stewart) will indeed be making an appearance at the end of “The Wolverine”, though he warns:

[Professor X’s appearance] doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what’s inside [The Wolverine].

Translation: Professor X is there purely to tie “The Wolverine” up with Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, much like how Nick Fury did with the Marvel films. Can’t blame Fox for following in Marvel’s footsteps. If you can’t beat’em, copy’em, I guess.

“The Wolverine”, starring Hugh Jackman, Brian Tee, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Rila Fukushima, James Fraser, Tao Okamoto, and Hal Yamanouchi, snikts it this July 26, 2013.
