James Mangold Confirms Secret Cameo Appearance at the End of The Wolverine

James Mangold, the director of this summer’s “The Wolverine”, recently sat down to talk about the movie with Entertainment Weekly (via Empire), and the director pretty much confirms a previously reported secret cameo appearance by someone familiar to the “X-Men” universe. No, not Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey. She’s been all over the trailers, so there’s nothing new there.

But first, what’s the deal with Jean Grey? Is she just going to show up in flashbacks? Apparently it’s a much more substantial role than previously thought, at least according to Mangold (and I presume he would know, being the director and all):

[Jean Grey] pops up to mock, comfort and advise Logan much as Number 6 tortured Gaius Baltar [in Battlestar Galactica].

So not just a cameo, then?

Patrick Stewart as Professor XMeanwhile, onto that secret cameo appearance. Yes, Mangold confirms, Professor X (aka Patrick Stewart) will indeed be making an appearance at the end of “The Wolverine”, though he warns:

[Professor X's appearance] doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what’s inside [The Wolverine].

Translation: Professor X is there purely to tie “The Wolverine” up with Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, much like how Nick Fury did with the Marvel films. Can’t blame Fox for following in Marvel’s footsteps. If you can’t beat’em, copy’em, I guess.

“The Wolverine”, starring Hugh Jackman, Brian Tee, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Rila Fukushima, James Fraser, Tao Okamoto, and Hal Yamanouchi, snikts it this July 26, 2013.

    I can see it now…

    Post credit sequence;

[a lonely Logan, triumphant after the events of The Wolverine, exits through the rear of a tavern in Madrid. He enters a dimly lit alley and walks towards his uncertain future. He is suddenly face to face with Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart)]

Xavier: “Logan, the X-Men need you. I need you.”

[an astonished Logan stares at his old, thought dead, former mentor]

    Logan: “Charles?! I… I thought..”

Xavier: “I know. I’ll explain along the way.”

    Logan: “Where are we going?”

Xavier: ” Back to the future!”

[a shocked Logan stands mouth agape. Xavier turns his wheelchair and leads the way. A brick wall stands a few feet in front of him]

Logan: “Charles, we’re running out of road.”

[Xavier lifts the cuff on his suit jacket to reveal a metalic tech device around his wrist]

Xavier: “Where we’re going we don’t need roads!”

[Xavier punches in a coordinate and just then a portal opens in front of them, the wheels on Xavier's chair lift and are folded mechanically into the chair converting into the hover type chair from the 90's cartoon era! Xavier and the wide eyed Logan dissappear into the vacumous gateway. Before his image completely vanishes you see the claws pop and the synonomous 'SNIKT' shatters the quiet]

Obviously I was joking but a similar scenario, minus the Back To The Future references, would be sweet! Especially the inclusion of the 90’s era hover chair! That would be amazing!
