James Marsters: Our Dragonball is Not Like Your Dragonball
By Nix | July 14, 2008 (11:10 am)
The Dragonball movie site DBmovie has translated an interview with James Marsters, Piccolo himself from the upcoming live-action “Dragonball” movie from James Wong, in which Marsters explains the difference between the movie and the original anime story. And no, you non-fans of the movie won’t like what he has to say, but those with an open mind may understand. Or not. Hey, it’s your dragonball, I suppose it’s entirely up to you whether you want to continually dump on the movie or just be happy that someone is actually making a movie out of it. Either/or, I suppose.
Here’s what Marsters said to Jump Square magazine — read the rest of it over at dbmovie:
What is the difference between the original and the live-action movie ?
JM: Definitely the story of this movie is different from the original. But it’s a necessary change because we need to condense the long story of the original for a movie. For example, some characters in the original don’t appear in the movie. And we try to give it a more gritty and graphic (realistic) feeling.
Though there are differences between the two, I think it is all right if the core part of Dragonball remains. I let my son watch the anime’s Dragonball, DBZ and DBGT since he was eight years old. At first, I thought it was too violent, but I realized this is the best show for training to become a true man. True men need not to flaunt themselves. Their calm, gentle and modest but when it comes to the crunch they don’t hesitate to kill the enemy, and I think that’s what Goku is.
Goku is a real man. I know my son received such a message and applied it to his own life. My son doesn’t use violence to others, but he isn’t afraid of his own anger. I think it’s an important thing.
“True men need not to flaunt themselves.”? Obviously the interview was translated from Japanese, which sort of explains why Marsters talks like one of those Shaolin monks from the TV show “Kung Fu” there towards the end.

huh. I’ve never seen Dragon Ball the way James Marsters sees it. Interesting interview though.
Proves that this guy haven’t read Dragonball nor understands who Piccolo is. Above that I couldn’t believe they let him say what he said to the country that’s just resorting to a boycott because lynching’s out of question.
get a life
I can see that you don’t have one
It’s not the same as the comic book because it can’t be.
thank u mr. obviouse
I really really really want to believe that this movie will be a great movie…but i highly doubt that it will. with that said i am still going to see the movie no matter what and support quite possibly the greatest anime series ive ever watched over the years. i hope that they make a second movie and go into the Z series, my faviote series btw lol. im not expecting a blockbuster hit…i just hope they stay true to the story and make us fans proud. lets all keep our fingers crossed.
i highly dought u have a life
My expectation for this movie is so low that if the action sequences would involve people with superhuman strength and speed shooting energy balls out of their palms at each other, and shits blow up, I’d be content.
my expectations that u will lose your virginity is very low
kwazo, Jacking off to pictures on the net doesn’t count as having lost your virginity!!! As for the rest of your Lame, idiotic posts: perhaps you should look at yourself before accusing others, most people only made one post yet they are the ones with no lives and deserve insults? It appears you trowel forums responding to everyone and insulting them, perhaps you should attempt to grasp a life, rather then putting down those who actually have one.
As for the movie, I hope it is good, all we can do is wait and see.
ok the budget on this film is 100 Mil i think they will have the FX down… and so far the recent scan of JC in the Blue GI looks more promising than the posters of him in a t-shirt with dragon ball hovering over his hand.. i think they should scrap those posters all together… And for those downing JC please stop he is a good actor… Invisible was not that great in my opinion but that was due to bad directing not his acting… He is really trying to further his carrier so i belive he will give it his all… Hope to see a trailer soon…
I hear people saying he’s committing career suicide by starring this flick though
i think we should scrap your dignity together and see how much is left
i think we should scrap together your dignity and see wats left
ingore the fact i used this twice it was an accidebt just like your face
Good or bad, I plan to see this movie. I am a James marsters fan. And it goes beyond his character spike from buffy. He did about 50 hours of audio books for the dresden files <a href=”http://www.buzzymultimedia.com/thedresdenfilesaudios.html and can not only act but be very believable with his accents. I think the dragonball movie will be its own ‘verse. We all know that some things just don’t translate well from one media to another.
Lomax
Changes is good, it makes thing interesting, hell i wouldnt want to see a movie if all it did was tell the same story of the anime “exactly” the same way, that would be too boring. it would be like that dumb one piece movie they did where they just took scene from the anime during the alabaster part.
If change is so good, then why the hell couldn’t they also change the names to something unrelated to Dragonball?
well im sure if they named it after u they wouldn’t eaven put it in theatres
Neither me nor Dragonball’s supposed for the big screen
clearly not u
I know Movies and i have to say that if you work hard on this picter and not make it corney then fans will love it. If you can put the best cast you can and have the right director that truly bleaves in what it could be, and a very, very, very good story line. Then im sure it would be the best movie that has come in a long time. I think it would be great to see the DBZ movie. I would love as long they try.
Your spelling is bad dude, but your right. If it’s good then it wont matter.
Hmm, has anyone read the Wikipedia about the movie or heard about the added characters that are going to be in the movie? Apparently, one of them is Goku’s schoolmate? Goku did not go to school!! WTF? lol this movie makes me sad ._.
u just dont like it because it doesnt relate to u, see goku had friends at school u probaly didnt and frankly that mkes me sad
i think the movie is going to be good because the directer who did transformers is doing this movie.
I doubt if there’s anything more retarded than what you’ve just said.
thats a good come back retarded
people must use that word alot on u
also it would be pretty difficult to stick to the excact storyline as the tv show
see those first two things i said were before i read all of yours
lol i sound about as stupid as all of u
its funny because im not 30 years old and live with my parents
peace all be back in 2 weeks to see the reviews
How can they do it without Krillin? That’s just wrong.
