James Marsters Talks DragonBall Movie
Dragonball: Evolution (2009) Movie — By Nix on February 1, 2008 |
In case you didn’t know, former Buffy and current Smallville star James Marsters is playing Lord Piccolo in the upcoming live-action version of “Dragonball”. You know, the movie that is either going to wow fans of the TV series, or make them really, really mad? Recently, Marsters talked about his character and the movie (supposedly budgeted at $100 million!) with TV Guide.
More:
TV Guide: You’re plunging into a big sci-fi feature next. Can you talk about the live-action Dragonball?
Marsters: Dragonball is the coolest television cartoon in the last 50,000 years. Its only failing is that the female characters aren’t drawn well — we’re going to fix that in the movie. It’s got a Shakespearean sense of good and evil and there are incredible action scenes with characters of unbelievable power. It’s going to be really visually exciting. I was told the budget is about $100 million.TV Guide: Nice to know you’re so enthusiastic. Who do you play?
Marsters: Lord Piccolo. He’s thousands of years old and a very long time ago he used to be a force of good but got into a bad argument and was put into prison for 2,000 years. It got him very angry, and he finds a way to escape and then tries to destroy the world. The cool thing is, anybody who has seen Dragonball knows that Lord Piccolo transforms into a character named Piccolo, and that is a whole other ball of wax. That is one of the most popular characters in the whole series. I’ve been told I’m working for people who will just flay me alive if I give too much information, but what I can tell you is the character is green, bald and has pointed ears. Heroic wouldn’t be the wrong term by the end, but it’s a long journey.
Hey, I’d be angry too if I was put in prison for 2,000 years because of an “argument”.

Right, without bieng funny.
Kame seperated himself from his evil side in order to become the new guardian of Earth, thus the evil side of him Manifested into Lord Piccolo. Hedidn’t get locked in prison tink about how powerfull the guy is!!!
I have the feeling im going to be as pissed off as the old school transformers fans were…
omg my spidie sence is tiggling in antisapation of a lot of bsing of the story line but….there is one thing im looking forward too that even if the moive sux that this one part will be good….chow young fat as roshi doing a kamahamaha wave ….. if they mess that up then yea ill be even more mad
from the looks of how things are going, I have a feeling that everyone save the ignorant and the fans of Marsters or Yunfat or whoever are going to boycott this movie
Wow. This is the farthest thing from the truth that i could possibly read. 1st: thousands of years old? No, only a few hundred. maybe 500? think about it – master roshi is a little over 300 cause he climbed korin’s tower 300 years before goku did, and roshi was alive and yuong when king piccolo first tried to take over the world and was sealed away in a jar by master mutyito (moo-ty-ee-toe, not sure how to spell it)
2nd: He never got into an argument with anyone, he never got sent to jail, he never was locked away for 2000 years, this is all BS. maybe the ‘argument’ they talk about was the fight between him and mutyito, and maybe the ‘jail’ is the jar, but he was released from that by pilaf. ‘then he tries to destroy the world’ thats about the only thing they got right lol.
3rd: he didnt use to be a force of good, he and kami used to be one person then kami forced the evil part of him (king piccolo) out of him so kami could become guardian of the earth.
this is seriously BS. honestly, this movie could be very visually amazing and an excellent, exciting action adventure movie. but if they mess up the story, the ppl who are gunna go see it, fans of the series, are gunna throw a fit.
i know sometimes movie makers take liberties with the stories when they make a movie out of something thats not a movei (i.e. a book, anime, etc) and sometimes it’s necessary, but this time around, they changed the story so much for absolutely no reason whatsoever. it’s only barely reminiscent of the actual story. =/
Would u guys quit bashing the movie, it hasnt even came out with any footage and u instantly hate it. Have faith in DBZ, they have ruled for over 10 years after production ended in 1996 and they are still coming out with the dvd’s. U really think that Fox is gonna let DBZ fail? Too much is riding on the success of this film. So quit hating and show some respect to Dragonball Z, they have earned it, and you fellow dbz viewers should know better!!!!
So…if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t bother. Fox let this one fall hard…big time. I believe this is one of the most horrible movies ever made. Trust me, you’ll feel like an idiot for having supported this movie. If you don’t believe me, check out a “professional” that supported it like you did, he feels like an idiot right now, but at least he;s willing to admit it.
Zac Bertschy’s blog on how we TRUE fans of db were right about this movie.

fyi, this guy is an editor from anime news network which is probably the best English portal for anime/manga.
people be mindful that no cartoon/comic book adaptation is going to be just like the original…hollywood if you think about it has never really stayed true to any storyline….for one if it did it would be way too long of a movie and for two they can’t have the live action movie be as “fantasy” as its cartoon/comic counter part. I think we should just kinda forget the cartoon and take it for the visually awesome movie that it is going to be. I’ve been a fan of dragonball, and dragonball z from the beginning and I dont expext them to truely honor every part of the storyline, they have to change things to make the storyline interesting for adults as well so they wont put piccolo in a jar instead it will be prison….ya’ll stop whining and take the film for what it is. ” a movie”
Well I think this is a great way to keep the Dragon Ball franchice alive. I loved Dragon Ball/Z/GT as a kid. So if you don’t like the idea just respect. You have to realize after all the DBZ (maybe DB and GT) episodes and the movies are remastered, Dragon Ball will probably be hung up in the closet and never come out again. So if the movie is or isn’t a success, it was a good way to go out with a fight. I’m really excited to see the Dragon Ball movie! Long live Dragon Ball!!
With boycotts against this movie erupting all over the world, this country’s making itself stand out like an idiot with so many comments defending this cinematic obsenity.
anime just be anime. it doesn’t fit to be live action. so dragon ball only for manga and anime. i just want akira toriyama continue the dragon ball z story. and change the dragon ball GT. too much error on GT. gohan can become super saiya again, no fusion, no ten shin han, goku became a kid and etc.
Fan, law, Nate, and Sato you guys all have good points. Fan is right when it comes to the storyline. But where’s the harm in changing it a little bit? If he went with the same storyline everyone would know what was going to happen. He just wants to suprise us. It’s not like he changing the character’s names and everything. Sato unfortunately unless some true fan has a story good enough the series is done. However fans are working on the DragonBall AF(which as fans should know would have came after GT) manga in Japan but I don’t when or if it will come to America. I think the series is on DVD but I don’t know for sure. Several video games will come out over the years Remember as long as you have the series on VHS or DVD,have video games, have action figures from when you were younger and other Dragon Ball products than Dragon Ball will never die.
