Screen Gems’ stab at “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” glory aka “Mortal Instruments” has chosen its male lead in Jamie Campbell Bower, currently lording it up something horny in the Starz Channel’s “Camelot” TV show. Bower has plenty of experience with starring in movies with a teen girl-heavy fanbase, having also co-starred in the “Twilight” franchise.
Bower will join female lead Lily Collins for director Scott Charles Stewart, who is re-teaming with Collins (he previously directed her in the poorly received “Priest” with Paul Bettany).
[Bower will] play Jace Wayland, starring alongside Lily Collins, who’ll play the lead heroine Clary Fray. She has The Sight, and can see both demons and Shadowhunters. Jace is one of the best of the latter. When Clary’s mother is abducted, she is forced to learn about her bloodline and abilities in order to get her mother back.
If you’ve seen Bower in “Camelot”, he’s actually somewhat convincing as an action hero. Of course, I don’t know if he’ll have to get all that physical in the franchise, but if needed, he could probably pull it off. “I am Number Four’s” Alex Pettyfer was previously rumored to be up for the role.
The would-be franchise will be based on the series of young adult novels by Casandra Clare.
