Jason Bourne Is Dead, Or Maybe He Will Become 007?

Ok, so maybe the title of this post is a little confusing, but first things first: For all you die hard fans out there holding out for a Bourne sequel with Matt Damon starring Jason Bourne, the answer is no. It’s already been covered, Damon will only do it if Director Paul Greengrass directs, but Greengrass has said “no”. However, a while ago we reported that Damon thinks a prequel may be in order.

In an interview with Collider, here’s how Damon thinks it could be possible:

Damon:  Well, I think that they have a good way to do a prequel with someone else, and basically make it about the Bourne identity, the actual identity. What any studio is interested in is making it like an evergreen, so it can just go on, and on, and on, and it never will with our character because he’s going to resolve himself and he’s resolved his issues now. He’s got his memory back three times. I don’t think anybody wants to see me say, “I don’t remember” again. But I think what we could do, is like, you know, so you can do some movies with another actor, anyway, whether it’s Ryan Gosling or Russell Crowe or Denzel Washington, and he’s Jason Bourne. And then at the end of his one movie, or two movies, or three movies, you see them getting ready to pass the identity on to me, so it just becomes like a 007, it becomes a name that they give this certain person who’s uniquely positioned. Right? And so then, if Paul and I come back and do a fourth one in 10 years, right, we’ll pass it on to someone else, and then it can kind of go on. But I think the only way to make it go away from us is to say no.

Russel Crowe as Bourne? I know you’re only using him as an example, Damon, but am I cool with that? And yes, for anyone who skimmed over that entire quote without taking anything in, Damon is thinking the Bourne series could be turned into a franchise similar to James Bond.

Of course, with the way things change in Hollywood, Damon may very well change his mind at a later date, but turning the Bourne series into a James Bond-like series is an interesting idea to toy with. Sure there’ll be a few duds, maybe a couple with Bourne in space, but in the end it could turn out alright (given that we don’t get sick of the whole amnesia thing after a while).

That’s an interesting take. Seeing as there is no real Jason Bourne, it could work. A name which is the American equivalent to the 007 title. If done well it could work. But only if done well. And then three’s the problem of how many prequels would there be. If one does well they’re gonna want to make more.

Actually Damon is onto something reagrding Bourne presequel. Bear with me as my intent is not to suggest a soap opera plot. In Ultimatum you saw glimpses of memory when Damon as David Webb entered into CIA program as a volunteer. No timeline is offered as to how long Webb was trained etc… What is known from film is David Webb was a Captain in the US Army before entering into CIA program. Since this was CIA’s/govt’s top assassin program ALL medical/military trainig would be available. SOOO it is not out of realm that David Webb may have had plastic surgery to alter his appearance would it not? My point is an imaginative writer could write a Bourne prequel with this idea in place. Maybe showing Webb’s expolits in Army and how and why he was recruited to become bourne. When first Bourne film came out in 2002 Damon was around 30. So any good actor under 30 with at very least a similar body build and slight resemblance to Matt Damon could be recruited to play Bourne. With the later explanation he had surgical plastic surgey to alter his appearnace to look like Matt Damon in later Bourne films. This is not far fetched considering it is a top secret gov’t program.

The fact I wrote that synopsis above tell’s you how interesting the character and story is… To all the book fans… Ludlum saw the first Bourne film and liked it. He had no problem with different story line. Any sugestions of an actor who matches my plot suggestion would be appreciated.

Should there be another bourne film? – if ludlum would be alive, he would write another one – so yes there should be another film.

“007Bond = Jason Bourne -Idea” – completly bullshit – would ruin all the films.

bourne 4 without matt damon? – .. – i would burn that dvd. no way.

universal has to accept that the bourne films with matt are not just any third class action films, so it has to end.. but not yet.

If Greengress does not direct the next Bourne movie, I can tell you it will not be the same…We need him & Damon plain and simple
