With the help of a kid who was born on the seventh day of the seventh week of the seventh grade. Or something like that. But it’s mostly Jeff Bridges fighting everyone and everything, at least according to this first trailer for Sergei Bodrov’s action-packed “Seventh Son”. Who knew the Dude would end up playing mentors to every young buck in Hollywood? First there was “True Grit”, then there’s the upcoming “R.I.P.D.”, and now “Seventh Son”.
The movie is based on the series of bestselling “Last Apprentice” books by author Joseph Delaney, and is clearly being prepped as the first of a franchise. Of course, whether it actually launches a movie franchise remains to be see. I guess we’ll find out when the film opens early next year.
In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.
In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other.
Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.
Starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander, Antje Traue, Olivia Williams, and Kit Harington.
Saving the world one dragon at a time next year, January 17, 2014.
