Last we heard on the “Dumb and Dumber 2″ front, Jim Carrey was done with it. D-O-N-E. Done. Carrey’s reasons? He cited a “lack of enthusiasm” from the studio on the sequel, which resulted in very slow movements on the film. Carrey was apparently very enthusiastic about the sequel at first, and saw the studio’s lack of equal enthusiasm to be something of a slap in the face.
According to Jeff Daniels, the other half of the “Dumb and Dumber” duo, the sequel is still happening, and Carrey is still involved. While out promoting his HBO show “The Newsroom” at the TCA, Daniels updated the gathered press on the status of “Dumb and Dumber 2″, saying:
Jim wants to do it. I want to do it. The Farrellys want to do it. They want to rewrite the script a little bit and they aren’t trying to jam it in before I have to go back and do ‘Newsroom’ in November. So they’re going, ‘Why don’t we just do it right? Let’s get everybody organized to go next May or June.’ If everything works out on the business side, that’s what we’ll do but I think there’s more hope than ever.
As for Carrey’s very public pronouncements?
I understood why, because this has been a year and a half of a whole bunch of are we, aren’t we, what’s going on, yeah the script’s funny, no it’s not, now we have to have notes. So I think Jim just got frustrated and I completely got it. I was frustrated too. We thought it was in pretty good shape. The studio and others wanted some more work done it. The Farrellys wanted more work done on it so they got working on it and I think last week they decided to push the shooting of it to next year, possibly because I wasn’t going to move ‘The Newsroom.’
So there you have it. Daniels thinks it’ll happen, as early as next year, in fact.
And yes, it should amuse you to no end that Jeff Daniels, star of HBO’s “The Newsroom”, is talking so enthusiastically about the sequel to a gross-out comedy that panders to the lowest common denominator (no offense, guys) while at a press gig to promote a supposedly “prestigious” Aaron Sorkin-created TV show about serious journalism. You gotta love Hollywood.
