That’s the current rumor floating about the Interwebs today (via Bloody-Disgusting), which has “Hurt Locker” and “Mission Impossible 4” star Jeremy Renner currently in “close talks” to land the one-eye lead of one Snake Plissken in a long gestating remake of John Carpenter’s classic sci-fi film.
Renner is on a roll post-“Hurt Locker” after years of toiling in supporting roles in films like “SWAT” and “28 Weeks Later”. And in Hollywood, striking while the iron is hot is definitely the way to go. Get it while the going’s good, cause you might not have it to get in a few years. He’s also parlayed that into a co-starring role as Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s upcoming “Avengers” movie.
If Renner does end up signing on to “Escape from New York”, he’ll be joining director Breck Eisner, who is no stranger to remakes, having remade “The Crazies” a year back. He also directed “Sahara” a few years ago.
Like the 1981 original, the “Escape from New York” remake is expected to follow a similar premise, though with some differences. Anti-hero Snake Plissken will still be jettison into a cardoned-off New York in the near future to save a VIP with the price of failure being his life. Sucks to be him. It’s a good thing he’s such a kick ass badass, then.
