Jerry Bruckheimer Has Plans for More Pirates of the Caribbean Standalone Stories

“Pirates of the Caribbean 5″? How about a “Pirates of the Caribbean 6″? Well if Johnny Depp agrees to keep coming back, then uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s got the notion to make them happen. In fact, Bruckheimer reveals that he’s already got a fifth “Pirates” movie in the works, with writers currently working on the screenplay. And according to Bruckheimer, all future “Pirates” movies will be standalone episodes similar to “On Stranger Tides”, which means no more 3-movie arc like the first three films in the franchise.

At test screenings of “On Stranger Tides,” “the audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story,” Bruckheimer said in an interview alongside [Rob] Marshall. “So that will carry over into the next one, too, to give it something fresh and different. As long as the audience embraces this one, we’ll certainly try to make another one. It’s really up to Johnny. He loves the character.”

Of course, it all hinges on Depp returning for a fifth and sixth movie. After all, there IS no “Pirates of the Caribbean” without Captain Jack Sparrow. You can replace Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but you ain’t getting a “Pirates” movie out of dock without the drunken Cap’n. Or you could, I suppose, but it’s doubtful many moviegoers will be signing up to take the trip with you.

The tides get stranger May 20, 2011.

Tis not true that Jack Sparrow has to be a part of pirates films. I for one would of loved to have seen Tim Powers “On Stranger Tides” done completely true to the book and not as part of Jack Sparrow’s reality. Don’t get me wrong I love Johnny Depp’s character but the book would of made a great (better) pirate movie on its own merit. I wouldn’t mind seeing more Jack Sparrow stories but there are great characters and stories in many a pirate tale that many of us would love to see made into movies. The Vampirates series for example would be interesting to both vampire and pirate fans.
