I don’t know what kind of mojo Shane Black’s got working over there in “Iron Man 3” land, but he’s sure getting some big names to be playing essentially second-tier characters in his movie. Or in the case of Guy Pearce, who last week was said to be in talks to play a scientist name Aldrich Killian, a glorified cameo.
Now you can add Jessica Chastain to the list of A-listers looking to land a co-starring role in the comic book sequel. The trades say Chastain was originally offered the role, but had other fires in the oven and couldn’t do the gig. But now that her very, very busy schedule has opened up, Chastain is back in the hunt to play “a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark”.
That “sexy scientist” has no name in the article, but if Black’s “Iron Man 3” follows the Warren Ellis “Extremis” storyline that it’s rumored it will be doing (it would seem to make since, given Pearce’s Aldrich Killian casting, another important character from “Extremis”), then Chastain is probably playing scientist Maya Hansen, Killian’s colleague who calls in old friend Tony Stark for a little assistance in containing a dangerous new nanotechnology that has fallen into the hands of bad guys.
Ben Kingsley was previously signed on to play head honcho of said bad guys.
When Chastain’s schedule prevented her from doing “Iron Man 3”, actresses like Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher were up for her part. Well sorry, ladies, looks like Chastain is back on the ball and it’s her role again. Oh well.
Chastain will join Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, along with Don Cheadle and Gwyneth Paltrow. With the previous two “Iron Man” films’ director, Jon Favreau having bailed on the franchise, it’s anybody’s guess if the actor/director will return as Tony’s chauffeur/bodyguard, Happy Hogan.
“Iron Man 3” is set to shoot this Summer.
