The last time I saw a semi-trailer (more like a promo reel) for Peter Chan’s “The Warlord”, his martial arts epic starring Andy Lau, Jet Li, and Takeshi Kaneshiro, I wasn’t that impressed. It had some nice moments, but overall I thought it looked…forced. Via Asianpopcorn, here are more looks at the upcoming “Warlords”, featuring new character posters for the main players — Li, Lau, Kaneshiro, and actress Xu Jinglei — while also sporting a brand spanking new trailer for the movie, which is scheduled to hit Asia sometime December 2007. And wow, what a trailer.
The first minute of the new trailer has Li, Lau, and Kaneshiro murdering three victims in cold blood. (Unfortunately the trailer was in Chinese, so I don’t know why they did it; some kind of pact, perhaps?) The trailer then shows the movie’s money shots — large, massive battle scenes with 1000s of extras.
It’s a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on “The Assassination of Ma,” a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi. The story was filmed by Zhang Che in 1973 as The Blood Brothers.
“The Warlords” is actually one of many Chinese epic movies geared for late 2007/early 2008. Andy Lau himself is in another one, “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon” with Maggie Q., and Jet Li is currently shooting “The Forbidden Kingdom” with Jackie Chan. Meanwhile, John Woo is also working on his own “Three Kingdoms” story, “The Battle of Red Cliff”, which also stars Takeshi Kaneshiro.
