Jet Li and Jackie Chan Survives Sarah Marshall

It was close, but as we predicted, the combination of Jet Li and Jackie Chan’s first-ever onscreen collaboration in “The Forbidden Kingdom” was just strong enough to survive a furious challenge from the Judd Apatow-produced comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” to take #1 at the box office over the weekend. The Disney martial arts movie took in $20 million in its opening weekend, besting “Marshall” by $ 3 million. The week’s only other challenger, the Al Pacino thriller “88 Minutes” landed at #4 with $6.8 million.

Probably most surprising is that the teen slasher flick “Prom Night” still made another $9 million despite falling to the #3 slot after its surprise #1 finish last week. So far, the poorly reviewed horror remake has grossed a surprising $32 million at the box office, all but guaranteeing a sequel, as teen horror movies are wont to do.

Not doing quite as well is Keanu Reeves’ “Street Kings”, which plummeted to #7 with $4 million, putting its 2-week total at just under $20 million. Not exactly great numbers for a major Hollywood movie with a major movie star, and an all-star cast to back him up. Ouch.

Way out on the fringe, the Ben Stein documentary “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” did surprisingly well, making $3 million in its debut, good enough for ninth place. The film opened in 1052 theaters compared to “Street Kings'” 2469. And since you probably didn’t even know the movie existed, or saw ads for it on TV, $3 million is a pretty good take for a documentary made by someone not named Michael Moore.
