I've no insider info or behind-the-scenes spy whispering to me but I believe it's pretty clear that "Cloverfield" is a U.S. remake of the 2006 Korean film The Host. The fact that J.J. Abram's monster is reputed to be tenatively named the parasite seems to be an obvious (perhaps lazy) play on the Korean film. U.S. filmmakers don't have a problem making remakes of foreign films mere months after their original release dates, especially if the film is popular and the story finds an audience. They bank on the truth that American audiences don't like subtitles and don't have much appetite for overseas movies. That way they can re-package foreign work and pass it off on the U.S. market without fear they have already seen the original.
Just one humble opinion.
