J.J. Abrams to Tell The Untold Story of the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist
The Untold Story of the World's Biggest Diamond Heist Movie — By Nix on March 17, 2009
He’s done spy TV (Alias), international action (”Mission Impossible 3″), and sci-fi (”Star Trek”), and now J.J. Abrams may be setting himself up to direct a movie version of “The Untold Story of the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist”, which, well, tells the untold story of the world’s biggest diamond heist. Geez, try to pay attention, will ya? Abrams will definitely produce through his Bad Robot, though.
According to THR, Paramount Pictures have purchased the rights to Joshua Davis’ article on how some Italian thieves stole approximately $100 million dollars worth of diamonds and jewels in 2003 and got away with it. Well, sort of.
The article, which will be published in the April issue of Wired, describes the true story of an unprecedented diamond heist in Antwerp, Belgium, and the crew that pulled it off. In early 2003, a small group of Italian thieves miraculously circumvented 10 layers of security to access a vault beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and make off with a purported $100 million in diamonds, gold and jewelry (the actual value is still a mystery).
The article mentions that Davis spent six years writing the article and talking to Leonardo Notarbartolo, the mastermind behind the robbery, who is currently stuck in a Belgian prison doing a 10-year stint. Which, er, means he didn’t really get away with it. Unless he got caught for jaywalking, which would kind of suck, but also be pretty cool in an ironic fashion.
Note: he didn’t really get away with it. He was arrested for the robbery and convicted based on circumstantial evidence, which seems moot now that he’s, you know, confessed to the whole shebang. You can read the whole article at Wired.com.
Below: So how did they do it? This video reveals all.
