The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant reminds me of a joke from Mad Men: having gone to Niagra Falls on a honeymoon, one of the characters sends back a postcard that says, “From the wettest place on Earth.” The wetness in the book, however, is referring to alcohol, since it’s a novel based on Prohibition-era bootlegging. John Hillcoat pitched the idea of an adaptation as a possible followup to The Road, with Shia LaBeouf and Ryan Gossling starring together.
There is no guarantee that it will be made, but it looks like Hillcoat is serious about it. Collider recently came up with a promo poster that reveals a name change and casting additions (you have to scroll past the aliens vs. ninjas, as provocative as that sounds). Along with adding Amy Adams to the cast, its name now appears to be The Promised Land. I couldn’t see Hillcoat changing the name of something like The Road, but The Wettest County in the World is the kind of interesting idea that a director could really take and own as a film. Nick Cave has already begun the process of writing the script. Cave has teamed up with Hillcoat once before on the 2005 film The Proposition. With talent all around, hopefully good things will come out of this project.
