Johnny Depp as … Doctor Strange?

The World Premiere of Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' "The Lone Ranger"

Who is Marvel eyeing to play their Sorcerer Supreme in an upcoming/potential “Doctor Strange” movie? According to reports, it’s none other than Captain Jack Sparrow, aka Tonto, aka Johnny Depp.

The rumor comes courtesy of Latino-Review, who previously gave us the low-down on what to expect from a “Doctor Strange” movie, and now has another scoop. Of course, whether they were right or not about the last bit of news is open to debate, since Marvel has been moving pretty slowly on “Doctor Strange.” Not a surprise, because they tend to move pretty deliberately on all their movies, opting for doing it right instead of doing it fast.

Writes LR:

A well-connected source informed me tonight that Johnny Depp has taken a meeting with Marvel to discuss taking on the role of Dr. Strange.

Apparently Depp is “a comic book fan,” but then again, they all say that, don’t they? Comics are in these days. I mean, Marvel even got Robert Redford in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Ben Kingsley in “Iron Man 3,” and just recently, Michael Douglas in “Ant-Man.” Suddenly even established guys you wouldn’t necessarily associate with the genre are hopping onboard.

So, Depp as Doctor Strange? After the bomb of “The Lone Ranger,” I suppose he could use a surefire hit. And let’s face it, these days you don’t get anymore surefire than starring in a Marvel comic book movie. Depp has Wally Pfister’s “Transcendence” coming up. It looks like a fantastic movie, but I’m not sure if it’ll be the hit he needs to chase away the stink of “The Lone Ranger.”

OK, this would be pretty damned good choice as far as I’m concerned.

I can see this working. What I’m looking for is to see Depp do music for a movie. I hear he’s a pretty good musician. I know that he has played with a number of well-known acts and may even have a profile up on MusicUNited.com.

      He’s a damned good guitarist!

I don’t like it! Sorry but after 3 Pirates of the Caribbean (because there are ONLY 3), every time I see Depp I see Jack Sparrow. In any movie he makes.

Honestly I don’t want him putting on a cape. I won’t really believe him.

Bloody hell! Does Hollywood seriously need to give Johnny Depp an excuse to continue playing Jack Sparrow/Mad Hatter/ Tonto/ Edward Scissorhands/ Willy Wonka or any of his roles since 2001? He stopped acting years ago!

Let the hating comence…oh wait it already has! LOL. Personally I think Luke Evans would be best for the part. The right age, and look, and gravitas for the role. That said Depp would be a good fit as well. He would need to play it closer to his roles in Ninth Gate, and even From Hell. Throw in a bit of madness (using the Eye should unhinge the user slightly as seing through mystical veils is something we weren’t meant to do) but not on the level of camp as Jack Sparrow, and not as often and we’d have an interesting Doctor Strange. I’d cast Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa as The Ancient One, Chow Yun Fat or Jackie Chan as Wong, and Liam Neeson as Baron Mordo.

I honestly don’t know why I don’t dig Luke Evans either. I really don’t know. He’s like Orlando Bloom’s older brother. They look a bit.

Desolation of Smaug was the only movie so far were I could stand him.

Never mind. I think I just fell in love with the rumor of having Viggo Mortensen playing Dr. Strange.

Juggernaut Liked him too, but he’s too old at this point. They would’ve had to get him a few years back, maybe right after Hidalgo. Also Jim Caviezel. But same with him, and now he’s got Persons of Interest.
As for Evans I always call him the Manlier Orlando Bloom. I liked him in Three Musketeers a lot, and I look forward to him in “Dracula Untold” and “The Crow.”

Depp could be a good fit if he can reign in his penchance for the camp. I’d personally like to see Oscar Isaac in the role. He has the look, is a solid actor and after the success of Inside Llewyn Davos is ready to hit in a major way. Besides he is younger than Depp and could grow into the character. Depp would be anothe RDJ milking Marvel every time his contract was up to keep him involved.

I like Isaac. I really have since his part in “Sucker Punch,” and that says a lot because he was a very unlikeable character there. In the few things I’ve seen him in since he’s been very good.
