Jonathan Rhys Meyers Joining The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Vanity Fair (2004) Movie ImageWith Summit’s “The Twilight Saga” wrapping up with “Breaking Dawn Part 2” later this year, someone’s gotta take its place. Why not “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”, the first in what is expected to be a new franchise based on the books by Cassandra Clare?

Like “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games”, Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” books are considered Young Adult, and would star “Mirror Mirror’s” Lily Collins as “a young woman who discovers she is the descendant of a secret cadre of half-angel warriors called Shadowhunters locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons.”

Sheesh. And you thought you had it bad as a teen.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who recently landed the titular role of Dracula in an ongoing TV series called “Dracula”, is now in talks to join the cast of the film. He would play someone name Valentine Morgenstern, described as “a powerful but insane Shadowhunter looking to make the world pure at any cost.” Well, if you’re going to be insane, mind as well be powerful too, I always say.

Meyers joins Collins, along with Jamie Campbell Bower, “Game of Thrones'” Lena Headey, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Durand, and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'” Jared Harris.

Harald Zwart, who last helmed the “Karate Kid” remake, is directing.
