First and last seen looking like he was ready for a titanic fight with Earth’s mightiest heroes, it appears the Mad Titan will indeed be the main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come.
Sources are confirming all over the place today that Josh Brolin will play Thanos, first as a voice in James Gunn’s upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy,” before doing what insiders are calling a more “prominent role” in Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” later next year.
The news was originally reported by Latino-Review, before the trades confirmed it with their own sources. I’m guessing an official announcement from Marvel will be forthcoming soon enough.
Although we’ve already seen Thanos at the end of 2012’s “The Avengers” (screenshot below), he was played by a different actor back then. Brolin is coming off Robert Rodriguez’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” making “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” three comic book movies in a roll.
How big of a role will Thanos have in “Guardians” and “Age of Ultron”? Likely not that big. I suspect Whedon is saving the big lug up for a major throwdown with not just the Avengers, but also the Guardians in the two films’ respective sequels, and whoever else shows up before those two movies.
I don’t think Thanos will have a major role in “Age of Ultron,” considering that movie’s already going to be huge with Ultron as the villain. Likewise with “Guardians” setting up, well, the guardians. Certain shiny jewelry, no doubt, will also be involved when we get a better glimpse of the villain.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” opens this August 1st, setting up Marvel’s intergalactic landscape. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opens next year on May 1st, 2015, with even more superheroes coming into the fold. It will be interesting how ol Thanos figures into the menace of Ultron.
