Joss Whedon Talks About How Thanos Will Menace The Marvel Universe

Has Joss Whedon recently just confirmed that Thanos, the purple villain seen at the end of “The Avengers”, will be going full-bore villain in the sequel, “The Avengers 2″? It sure sounds like it.

Desde Hollywood was one of many media outlets at last week’s big “Iron Man 3″ premiere in Hollywood, where they caught up with Joss Whedon and tossed him some questions. I can imagine Whedon must have answered about a bazillion questions about “The Avengers 2″ at that shindig, and maybe Desde got to him when he had his Marvel Super Secret Cloak down, which could explain the slip up, if it was indeed a “slip up”.

Whatever the case, when asked about Thanos, here’s how Whedon responded:

Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to threading through the universe and to save the big finale for ‘the big finally’. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on.

The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.

So, Thanos for “The Avengers 2″, then, Joss? I know, it seems fairly obvious given the last scene in “The Avengers”, but you just never know with Marvel. I’m frankly surprised Whedon was so open about the character, which again leads me to think the guy was just worn down by the time Desde Hollywood got to him.

And oh yeah, he also answered a question about Robert Downey Jr. returning for “Iron Man 4″. At this point, I can’t see anyone else playing the character. Or playing it just as well. Then again, three is a lot of movies, Maybe Marvel should retire ol shellhead for a few years then bring him out of retirement about 5, 10 years from now ala “The Dark Knight Returns”? Just a thought.

Here’s the interview with Whedon (he sure sounds hoarse there, probably because he got asked this question all day and was nice enough to keep answering would be my guess):

As torturous as it would be, holding Thanos for A3 it would be for the best. I’d love to see the tension build throughout the phase 2 and 3 films and finally get an epic payoff.

Given that it’s going to take him 3 years to do Avengers 2, you’re willing to wait for 6 years for the payoff? (And then risk Whedon leaving after part 2?)

Actually yes! Lol. Because if they plan it out right they could get him to commit to doing both films at once like a LoTR film. And I can actually see him doing that. He loves this franchise and I really don’t see him getting burnt out if the gaps are so big.

Here’s what I’m picturing teh World Security Coucncil brings in Dr. Henry Pym design on a new AI to go with a robot they’ve been working on for a new kind of soldier, since the Avnegers can’t be counted on in their eyes. The Ultron Project is the culmination of everything they’ve learned between the Destroyer, the chitauri, and even a little reverese engineered Stark tech. Obviously Ultron takes his progaramming and changes it from protecting humanity, to destroying it and we get Avengers 2.
