Joss Whedon to Write, Develop, and Possibly Direct a S.H.I.E.L.D TV Series for Marvel

When Marvel signed up Joss Whedon to write and direct “The Avengers” sequel, along with givign him creative input in the “next phase” of their cinematic universe, they weren’t kidding around. You know that S.H.I.E.L.D TV show Marvel has been talking about doing in the wake of “The Avengers” success? Well it’s getting done — with Joss Whedon.

That’s right, kids. A “S.H.I.E.L.D” TV series is a go, and what’s more, Joss Whedon will be on tap to develop it for Marvel, with the writer/director set to write the pilot along with co-producers Jed Whedon (his brother) and Maurissa Tancharoen. And oh — he might also direct the pilot episode, too, if he has the time.

S.H.I.E.L.D, of course, is the Marvel Universe’s supreme spy agency, and stands for “Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate”, though in another life it was known as “Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division”. Mind you, not that it matters. Just know that it’s the biggest, baddest spy agency in the world — big and how bad enough to pull a bunch of superheroes together to fight an alien invasion — and it’s run by Mister Eyepatch himself, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

A “S.H.I.E.L.D” TV series is the first project between Marvel TV and ABC Studios that has gotten the greenlight. Marvel has been trying to get a property up and running on TV for the last few years, with various attempts going down in flames, and others being talked about often, but never really going anywhere (Hi, Hulk!).

If I had to guess, and considering the speed of TV (and the high value of Whedon’s name at the moment), a “S.H.I.E.L.D” TV show could be coming to you pretty fast. Is it too much to hope for a late 2013 bow? Possibly early 2014? “The Avengers 2″ won’t be due out until 2015, and I suspect the sequel is going to take a lot of Whedon’s time just to prep, so if Marvel REALLY wants Whedon to direct the pilot, they’ll put this thing on the fast-track post-haste.

FX, or TNT please. i could see this working if done right.

The article says that ABC is working with Marvel on the show, does ABC own either Fx or TNT? I thought that Fox owned Fx and Turner Broadcasting owned TNT
Minor details really. My main point of interest will be the cast and direction of the series. I’d like to see it be a connecting thread between films as well as a “story of the week” type show like The X-Files or Law & Order

You are correct I was just hoping. And yeah that’d work One part “Fringe” one part Clone Wars.

As long as they have somebody from the comics “super hero” like luke cage or iron fist working with the agency it will be good.

Hmms. Cage and Fist are a bit off for S.H.I.E.L.D. but I wouldn’t mind seeing Sharon Carter, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabriel Jones, G.W. Bridge, Clay Quartermain showing. As for heroes I think the best bets are chracters like Ms. Marvel, Quasar, Moonknight, maybe Spiderwoman, or even Mockingbird. Throw in mercs like Silver Sable, and Dominic Fortune and we’re good

      • Juggernaut

That is absolutely the cast that they should go with. Having pivitol SHIELD members like Bridge and Quartermane being the Agent Coulson character to Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill would be the way to go. From there they could run into heroes (Ms. Marvel, Mockingbird, Spider-Woman, etc.) to set up an Avengers reserve team. Having Hill’s question of what will we do if we need them again when they are dispersed all over the globe? Being the empahasis for the creation of that unit. It could be very cool.

Indeed. i’ll take it a bit farther. Hill would be the Fury for the show with her being in charge, and I’d have Mockingbird and Ms. Marvel in their SHIELD agent roles. They could have her become Ms. marvel in the show or even in a movie. But the idea of the back up team would work. hell they could even intro Black Panther here before getting his own film.

          • Juggernaut

            That would be very cool!

I like this idea, anything close to Fringe or firsts seasons Xfiles quality would be great. And it would be a great window to expand the marvel universe with the less known heroes/villains. Since I think Hydra is going to be Captain America material, Taskmaster would be wonderful for the position of main villain

Hell yeah! You could actually have a whole arc on him starting with him as a SHIELD agent who decides to go rogue, but still has a sense of honor. He’ll train badguys but won’t do their dirty work if it’s too nasty. Or just make him truly messed up and become an actual villain!

      • Juggernaut

Great ideas there too. A Taskmaster grounded in a a hyper-realistic world would be really cool.
