The Man of Steel gets another mom. After landing Diane Lane as his Earth Mother, Superman has now landed Julia Ormond as his Kryptonian birth mother, Lara Lor-Van. Ormond will star opposite Russell Crowe, who was recently cast as Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian father.
Ormond and Crowe will have to compete with Lane and Earth Dad Kevin Costner for new Superman Henry Cavill’s attention in Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot of the Boy Scout, currently going under the title of “Man of Steel”, though I reckon they’ll officially tack the “Superman” part onto the title eventually, just to make sure people “get” that his is a Superman movie. Would they actually release the film without “Superman” in the title? I have a hard time believing it, especially from a marketing point of view.
About 15 years ago, Julia Ormond was an “It” girl in Hollywood, with roles in big studio films like “Sabrina”, “Legends of the Fall”, and “First Knight”. Like most “It” girls, though, Ormond’s career faded before it really got bright, but she’s been making a comeback the last few years, with recurring roles on TV crime procedurals like “CSI” and “Law and Order”. Playing Lara in “Man of Steel” is another big role following up on 2008’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.
Snyder is directing the WB film, with Batman savior Christopher Nolan producing.
Look for Supes to fly again in 2012.
