From American Idol to “The Last Caller”? That’s the route last year’s American Idol second-place finisher Katharine McPhee is taking, as she signs on to star in the independent dark romantic comedy “The Last Caller”, according to Comingsoon.net. Written by Michael Albanese, the story is described as a coming-of-age tale about a self-obsessed woman (McPhee) who searches for love, hope and meaning during a few random events with other urban seekers. Riiiight. Katharine McPhee has to “search for love”. Give me a break. Have you seen Katharine McPhee?
The film’s budget will fall in the $5 million-$8 million range, and shooting is scheduled to start in the fall in and around New York.
McPhee won’t be the first American Idol contestant to go from Reality TV to the movies. Most people have probably already forgotten (and indeed, most people have probably forced themselves to forget) that American Idol Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson actually did the Godawful “From Justin to Kelly” in order to cash in on AI’s insane popularity. It, well, didn’t work.
But don’t tell McPhee that. All she has to do is point to another former American Idol loser, Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for “Dreamgirls”.
