A little bird told me (a mockingjay, if you will) that there will be a “Hunger Games” TV spot made specifically for the Super Bowl this Sunday. That little bastard might have been lying, because Lionsgate has just released a new, theatrical trailer for the film. I suppose they could still shell out another few million for a 30-second spot, but that’s gonna seem mighty lame when we’re already getting a new minute-long trailer out there. But I suppose the gazillion eyeballs during the Super Bowl will be worth it.
For the uninitiated, Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games”. Katniss is a young woman with great bow skills in a dystopian future who is forced to compete in a reality game show (the “Hunger Games” of the title) where only one winner can emerge. In order for that to happen, she must kill all her fellow competitors. Yeah, kinda much to ask from a young woman, even one with great bow skills like our little Katniss. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth co-star as the two handsome lads in Katniss’ filthy, grey-tinted district who fights for her affections. Hutcherson’s character, Peeta, ends up in the games with her, while Hemsworth’s Gale watches from back home. Yup, it’s basically Jacob, Edward, and Bella all over again — minus the vampires and furry animals and dudes taking off their shirts for absolutely no reason.
Also co-starring Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jacqueline Emerson, Paula Malcomson, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields, and directed by Gary Ross.
The odds will probably NOT be in your favor March 23, 2012.
