Kazuaki Kiriya’s Goemon, to Direct Invasion Pic for Warner

Asian Movie News, Goemon (2009) Movie — By Nix on August 21, 2007

I will give him this: Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya has style to burn. As in, if you kept this guy doing music videos, which he was doing before he broke through with the lengthy sci-fi epic (which, in my opinion, was about an hour too long and 50 pages of script too little) “Casshern”, you could call him a genius. But put him in charge of a movie, with all the requisites of the art, such as coherent storytelling, and you’re asking for trouble. Yes, he’ll make you a movie filled with jazz, but good luck ignoring all the plot holes and poor stabs at narrative coherence. But I digress.

Apparently “Casshern” hasn’t put anyone off to Kiriya’s substance-free style, because three years later the director is currently shooting the real-life (?) ninja movie “Goemon”, based on the life of legendary 16th century ninja and bandit Ishikawa Goemon, which is scheduled to wrap in November, but don’t get in line for the movie just yet. The film may be wrapping up, but the “fantasy actioner” won’t be available until March 2009. Why so long? Probably because there is a lot of CGI to be done on the film even after principal photography.

Once he finishes “Goemon”, Kiriya will jump onboard Warner Bros. and do what is being called an “alien invasion pic” for them. One only hopes it actually makes some sense, and by that I mean one hopes Kiriya lets someone else write it, because God knows we don’t need more “Star Wars” prequels.

There doesn’t seem to be an images or any more info on “Goemon”, so here are some images from Kiriya’s ultra stylish “Casshern”:

Whatever doubts and concerns critics have about Kazuaki Kiriya’s ability to direct and take charge of making a movie will be put to rest in March 2009. So remember that you heard it here first. It is true that you can’t deny the existence of plot holes found in the movie “Casshern”, but even Kiriya himself will admit to it. I myself think that some of it was done purposely, but i won’t get out of control and take anything away from the raw talent he showed by making the sci-fi epic. Now, as for “Goemon”, do you really think that there will be a lack of substance with a movie based on the life of such a significant legend to Japanese folklore? Not likely, it would be suicide for Kiriyas’ career as a director and a slap in the face to Japanese people.
Prepare yourselves for an action-packed, stylistic, jaw-dropper with a fantasticly written screenplay that will help launch Kazuaki Kiriyas’ career all the way across the pacific ocean to Hollywood.
