I’ll admit it: Keanu Reeves’ upcoming “47 Ronin” movie both horrifies and intrigues me. The idea of Keanu Reeves playing a Samurai warrior is, uh, strange. Then again, Reeves has been known to pull off this type of roles before. Face it, he was pretty damn good in “The Matrix”, and I even think he was pretty good in “Constantine”. So “47 Ronin”? Yeah, “47 Ronin”.
Reeves recently revealed to MTV more about the film, which he calls a “kind of a Western”:
I call it a story of revenge and impossible love. The samurai become outcast and decide to enact revenge on the person who is responsible for the death of their lord.
He also talks about his character, Kai, which he describes as:
…an outsider, a kind of half-breed with a mysterious past, who’s in love with the princess and she’s in love with me, but we can’t be together. But during this journey and revenge, things change.
Only in today’s Hollywood would the hero need a love interest.
Still, this project intrigues me. The film will co-star Hiroyuki Sanada (“The Last Samurai”), with Carl Rinsch directing.
