Knightley, who was in the running for the role along with Evangeline Lilly (“Lost”) and Felicity Jones, has now won the gig, and will co-star alongside Chris Pine as the titular hero. Knightley will play Cathy Ryan, a role that has been previously played by three other women in three different cinematic incarnations of the Jack Ryan franchise, with Anne Archer inhabiting the role the longest alongside Harrison Ford as an older Ryan.
Pine will star as Jack Ryan in his days before entering the CIA’s employment. Here, Ryan is an ex-Marine and Moscow-based financial analyst who uncovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. It’s up to Ryan to save the day, as well as wife Keira Knightley.
“Jack Ryan” will be directed by Kenneth Branagh, who will also co-star as the film’s villain.
The Ryan train is really chugging along now. With a leading man, a leading lady, and the villain set, the reboot is also pursuing Kevin Costner to play Ryan’s eventual CIA mentor. Meanwhile, Tom Clancy’s “Without Remorse”, about Jack Ryan’s buddy John Clark, is also getting moving under Christopher McQuarrie.
