You know how in the Marvel Studios films, Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) went around all the movies, sometimes appearing for just a few minutes, in order to link the films to the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe that Marvel was building? Well, it looks like Paramount is going to use Kevin Costner to do that with their Jack Ryan franchise.
After being courted earlier this month to appear as Jack Ryan’s would-be CIA mentor in the upcoming “Jack Ryan” reboot, Kevin Costner has officially come aboard. He will play a CIA operative name William Harper, described as “a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan” and, later, does the same for John Kelly aka John Clark, the hero of Paramount’s other Jack Ryan franchise, “Without Remorse”, which is currently being scripted by “The Unusual Suspects'” Christopher McQuarrie.
And that’s not all. Apparently his role might lead to Costner getting his own movie, similar to how Marvel is always hinting at a possible Nick Fury movie. Though hopefully Costner will have better luck than ol Samuel L. Jackson. Has anybody been able to sniff a Nick Fury of SHIELD movie yet?
Costner is coming off the record-breaking “Hatfields & McCoys” mini-series for the History Channel, and can next be seen as Superman’s Earthling pop in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” next Summer.
“Jack Ryan” will shoot with Chris Pine as the new lead, and Kenneth Branagh directing and playing the villain. Keira Knightley was recently added to the cast as Ryan’s love interest and eventual wife.
