Kevin James Brings the Boom. Of Comedy. Or Something.

It’s funny, I was covering this Kevin James movie back when it didn’t even have a title. Now it’s gotten a title — “Here Comes the Boom” (maybe they should not have given it a title after all) — and a pair of trailers to boot. If you’re a Kevin James fan, this is definitely something you’ll be rushing to go see. But if you thought his “The Zoo Keeper” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” were less than, er, cinematic gold, well, why even talk about it? My nephews happen to think James is hilarious. I think he’s okay. As such, “Here Comes the Boom” looks okay. James vomiting on the MMA fighter after taking him down in the International trailer is pretty hilarious, though, but maybe that’s just me, I appreciate a good throw up joke every now and then.

In the comedy Here Comes the Boom, former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 42-year-old apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school. When cutbacks threaten to cancel the music program and lay off its teacher (Henry Winkler,) Scott begins to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy — most of all the school nurse, Bella (Salma Hayek) — but in his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school.

James stars, along with Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler, Melissa Peterman, and Greg Germann, with gratuitous appearances by actual MMA personalities Bas Rutten and Joe Rogan. I’m surprised to see Rutten in this movie, though, and even more surprise that he actually, you know, looks pretty good as an actor. Go figure. Frank Coraci, who also directed James in “The Zookeeper”, directs.

Paul Blart brings the boom October 12, 2012.
