Kevin Williamson to Produce Twilight TV Show — er, Vampire Diaries for CW

The CW believes they have the next teen craze on their hands — small town girls and brooding vampires. No, I’m not talking about a TV version of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” books. I’m talking about a TV version of L.J. Smith’s “Vampire Diaries” books, which came out in the early ’90s and has been recently repackaged with all-new covers to entice the “Twilight”-reading public. With kids everywhere waiting anxiously for “New Moon”, the “Twilight” sequel, the CW wants to strike while the iron is hot, and they’ve enlisted former CW man Kevin Williamson to write and produce a TV series based on “The Vampire Diaries” for them.

More about the books and storyline from Variety:

Originally published in 1993 – which, as the CW took pains to note, was years before Stephanie Meyer launched her “Twilight” book franchise – “Vampire Diaries” revolves around a young woman whose torn between two vampire brothers. The The brothers – one good, one evil — are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.

There have been four books in the Young Adult series so far. Here are the three main characters:

Elena: the golden girl, the leader, the one who can have any boy she wants.

Stefan: brooding and mysterious, he seems to be the only one who can resist Elena, even as he struggles to protect her from the horrors that haunt his past.

Damon: sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him. Determined to have Elena, he’d kill to possess her.

Obviously the biggest difference here is that the female lead is a popular girl, and the setting is Virginia. Of course, that won’t keep people from calling shenanigans on the project, like, er, I just did with the title. Ahem.

I actually refused to read Twilight because I was such a huge fan of the Vampire Diaries.. (the first 4 books were out when I was a teen.. ) I had to purchase 2 sets of copies after the original set I owned was so worn from reading them… (now.. they’re also worn out)I have not yet read the 5th installment and will be purchasing tomorrow.. (Wasn’t aware there was a 5th till about.. oh.. 2 mins ago) I just really hope that they don’t do what they did to The Sword of Truth Novels and completely change the story..plot..characters.. for no apparent reason. I’m 28 and still in love with this series.. Here’s hoping it doesn’t stray.. :)

Agreed! It’s so weird too because we’re both the same age now (I’m 28 too!), and everything you just wrote is what I’ve been trying to tell other people. I also didn’t know that there was a fifth book until a little while ago as well. :P Only since I’ve been seeing the commercials lately on CW that a series is coming out now. The thing is…now of all times??? Back when I was reading the series as a teenager, I was always dying for there to be an idea of a t.v. series or even a movie. So many years passed, so eventually I got over it, but never forgot about the books and how much I loved them.

I’m just a little frustrated that now of all times, they’re going to finally make a t.v. series, because it’s during the whole Twilight craze. Therefore, the younger generation most likely won’t know of The Vampire Diaries books (first 3, then 4), and readily assume that it’s a copy off of the Twilight series! Even when I first saw the Twilight books coming out in bookstores a couple years back, my first thought was “huh? This seems like a bite off of The Vampire Diaries books!”). That just made me never bother to read the Twilight books either.

I just started reading the Vampire Diaries and am in love with them!! But I wonder how the books will be enough to be made into a series…idk but i will watch it no matter what! I just really hope they at least stick to the basic plot and the characters have to be L.J. Smith’s description. This series better be as good as I think it can be and no one better try to say it is a rip-off from Twiilight. I absolutly refuse to read Twilight I hat following the crowd, but I am glad I did not miss the chance to read the Vampire Diaries. I love them!

I am in a rage right now. I just checked out IMDB and saw who they have cast. Every single person looks NOTHING like the descriptions in the books. I have been a fan for years of this series and was so happy to hear they were bringing it life, but now I am just shocked. Bonnie is supposed to be descendent from the Druids and she has red hair and freckles! The Bonnie they have cast is the complete opposite. And anyone who has read the first chapter of the first book knows that Elena is fair and extremely blonde, not dark skinned and dark haired!!! Oh my gosh. What is Kevin Williamson thinking??? L.J. Smith should be ashamed for allowing them to do this to those wonderful books.
