Kurt Russell Saddles Up Again for Gritty Western Bone Tomahawk

Kurt Russell in Tombstone (1993) Movie ImageIf you’re a fan of Westerns (especially those of the gritty variety), you should definitely get to know the name S. Craig Zahler. The screenwriter came out of nowhere and has sold a number of scripts to some important people, and has the said-to-be very bloody Western “The Brigands of Rattleborge” gestating around Hollywood, with names like Park Chan-wook in the mix to direct.

Zahler is apparently also smart enough to realize that he’s pretty hot stuff in Hollywood right now, and has managed to set up a new script called “Bone Tomahawk” in which he’ll be making his feature film directorial debut on. The film has also landed its stars in Kurt Russell, Peter Sarsgaard, Richard Jenkins and Jennifer Carpenter (of “Dexter” fame, below).

“Bone Tomahawk” will star Russell as a Sheriff who leads a team consisting of “a gunslinger, a befuddled oldster (Jenkins) and a cowboy (Sarsgaard) as they attempt to rescue a group of captives (including Carpenter) from a band of cannibalistic troglodytes.”

I love the description for Richard Jenkins’ character — “befuddled oldster”. Hilarious.

Zahler has also sold scripts with awesome titles like “The Big Stone Grid” (with Michael Mann attached to direct) and “Conflicts of the Last Progenitors”. Honestly, I don’t know how this guy comes up with titles for his scripts, but props to him.

And oh, if anyone has any of his scripts sitting around on their desktop, email me, won’t you?

Jennifer Carpenter
