Despite releasing a teaser trailer (below) for his new super duper secret sci-fi movie “Super 8” months ago, J.J. Abrams has just now gotten around to casting the movie. Hey, the teaser worked, didn’t it? It got you kids all a-quiverin’ in your Spiderman underoos, which was the point.
Anyways, Vulture reports that casting on the film has begun, with Kyle Chandler (the coach from “Friday Night Lights”) and 12-year-old Elle Fanning being the first two castmembers added to the movie. (Both pictured above.) If little Elle’s last name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the younger sister of Dakota Fanning. Hey, someone’s gotta fill Dakota’s creepy blonde hair Caucasian girl roles, right? It mind as well be little sis.
No word on what roles the two will be playing, which is par for the course with these super duper secret J.J. Abrams movies. Though considering a recent casting call, it seems likely that the movie’s main protagonists will be 12-13-year old teenagers, which would fit Fanning. That would make Chandler the dad or perhaps an Area 51 military dick.
What is known about “Super 8” is that the plot involves the U.S. Government’s super secret military installation called Area 51 and, of course, the aliens therein. (See, Area 51 is so super secret that there have been a gazillion movies about it and UFO nuts camp out all day and night outside it with telescopes snapping pictures and videos. Way to keep it secret, U.S. Government!)
“Super 8” is scheduled for summer 2011.
Here’s the teaser trailer in case you missed it the first time around:
