Lars von Trier’s Melancholia Will Blow Your Mind. Or Bore You. Either/or.

King of the artsy fartsy Lars von Trier returns with “Melancholia”, his follow-up to 2009’s, er, slightly controversial “Antichrist”. “Melancholia”, which stars Kirsten Dunst (yes, Kirsten Dunst from “Spider-Man”) and “24’s” Jack Bauer (aka Kiefer Sutherland), also features von Trier’s “Antichrist” star Charlotte Gainsbourg.

It’s about two sisters with major issues and a huge ass planet that is on a collision course with Earth. Death seems to be imminent, but of course this is a Lars von Trier movie, so you know it’s not a simple “end of the world” movie. Plus, I bet ol Lars got Kirsten to do things you probably didn’t think you would ever see her do in the movies. Just for that alone, this should be worth taking your first dip into the Lars von Trier side of the pool. Or not.

Also starring Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, and Charlotte Rampling.

The film is expected to make its premiere at Cannes this year.
