Well one thing’s for certain — after taking a gander at this first full, theatrical trailer for Gary Ross’ “The Hunger Games”, they’ve certainly stayed very close to the novel by Suzanne Collins. Which makes sense, since she also has co-credit on the screenplay. Of course, how far they detour when the series reaches its final installment will be interesting. After all, the series gets progressively more violent until, literally, war breaks out in the third book/movie. Until then, though, check out your best, first full look at “The Hunger Games” yet. I like what I see. Katniss is just as tough and unsure as she should be, and Peeta is, well, Peeta. Woody Harrelson with blonde hair is just odd, but then again, so is Elizabeth Banks as the ever sprite (and appropriately named) Effie Trinket.
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jacqueline Emerson, Paula Malcomson, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields and directed by Gary Ross.
The games commences March 23, 2012.
