Liam McIntyre is the Last Man Standing to Replace Andy Whitfield as Spartacus

Well, for now, anyway.

The last time we reported on a possible replacement for Andy Whitfield in the Starz Channel’s “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”, it was revealed that three candidates were being flown to New Zealand where the show is shot to screen test for the cast and crew. The three frontrunners were Stephen Amell, Aiden Turner and Liam McIntyre.

Now Deadline has updated their initial story with this news: Amell and Turner are out of the running, leaving Liam McIntyre as the lone possible Whitfield replacement.

Or maybe not. Huh?

Deadline clarifies:

But I hear Starz brass is considering all options for its hit series, including the possibility of ending it or bringing in someone else for the lead.

So, still a big cloud around who will land the gig, or if “Spartacus” will even return for a second season, apparently. Honestly, I don’t know why they wouldn’t continue the show. TV is a business, after all, and I’m sure the fanbase will understand that the “show must go on” if you will, especially in light of Whitfield’s situation.

As a fan of the show, I’m very curious how it will all shake out. I like Whitfield and all, but it’s the story that matters for me, and the character of Spartacus, and it would suck if we didn’t see where ths slave rebellion eventually ends up.

Here’s another pic of McIntyre. He actually looks a bit like Whitfield. And Sam Worthington, now that I think about it. Must be an Aussie thing.
