Liam McIntyre is the Last Man Standing to Replace Andy Whitfield as Spartacus

Well, for now, anyway.

The last time we reported on a possible replacement for Andy Whitfield in the Starz Channel’s “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”, it was revealed that three candidates were being flown to New Zealand where the show is shot to screen test for the cast and crew. The three frontrunners were Stephen Amell, Aiden Turner and Liam McIntyre.

Now Deadline has updated their initial story with this news: Amell and Turner are out of the running, leaving Liam McIntyre as the lone possible Whitfield replacement.

Or maybe not. Huh?

Deadline clarifies:

But I hear Starz brass is considering all options for its hit series, including the possibility of ending it or bringing in someone else for the lead.

So, still a big cloud around who will land the gig, or if “Spartacus” will even return for a second season, apparently. Honestly, I don’t know why they wouldn’t continue the show. TV is a business, after all, and I’m sure the fanbase will understand that the “show must go on” if you will, especially in light of Whitfield’s situation.

As a fan of the show, I’m very curious how it will all shake out. I like Whitfield and all, but it’s the story that matters for me, and the character of Spartacus, and it would suck if we didn’t see where ths slave rebellion eventually ends up.

Here’s another pic of McIntyre. He actually looks a bit like Whitfield. And Sam Worthington, now that I think about it. Must be an Aussie thing.

Well there are a lot of fans that just cannot imagine anyone else playing him as well. Andy was perfection in that role. It is so very very hard seeing anyone else in the role. All that being said….I would like the show to continue. But the magic for me perhaps will be gone. Not sure lightening can strike twice.

I really hope they do continue the show. I’m hard pressed to imagine anyone else but Whitfield in the part, but the reality of the situation is that he won’t be back. This guy actually looks a little like Whitfield when his hair is short (check his IMDB page) and who knows what kind of an actor he is. Give time to bulk up (roids) and he may just be a decent replacement.

Most people can’t deal with a change of actors for a main role. But the death of Richard Harris, the first Dumbledor in the HP series, and the subsequent replacement if him with Michael Gambon was very well done. They are vastly different and yet the character’s essence is still there, as is the personality as well. Give this guy a chance people.

I’m sure this guy is a fine actor but it doesn’t sound like he’s got what they are really looking for and it would be a shame to give it to someone just cos he’s the best they can find right now. And he does look a bit like Andy but it’s not an aussie thing cos Andy’s welsh.

I think its a good choice. Those other two finalists looked like GQ ads. This guy has character in that face that can easily express tragedy. After all, this is a sad, tragic story, not a Ralph Lauren underwear ad.

he doesn’t look like Andy Whitfield at all…..

  • Denis

Yep. With Liam, Spartacus will be a real tragedy.
    Why not Robert Pattinson xD.

First of all no! Please tell me that was a joke. Second, the show must go on. In the tradition of stage plays and such, if an actor cannot fulfil his duties for health reasons, another shall take their place. It sucks yes, but better the show continue rather than end. I have faith in Liam, and in the casting staff and in Whitfield’s endorsement.

this guy will not do…………… wait for andy 1,2,3 years if you have to.. if not this show is gone with in a year, mark my words!
