“John Dies at the End” is one of my most anticipated movies of the next few months. It looks completely nuts, in all of the best possible ways. Add director Don Coscarelli (“Phantasm”, “Bubba Ho-Tep”, “Beastmaster”) to the equation and you have a significant chunk of my attention.
The trippy, drug-fueled horror/fantasy is based on the novel by David Wong, and has been making the festival rounds over the last year, earning raves at Sundance, SXSW, and SIFF. You won’t be able to see the movie for yourself until it drops on VOD on December 27, 2012, but now you can gawk at a new, appropriately loopy poster. Hell, the look on Paul Giamatti’s face in this picture alone should be enough to make you salivate over this. The guy with the shotgun, the weird sucker alien guys, and the baseball bat with the nails through it are just gravy.
Here’s the synopsis:
In “John Dies at the End”, it’s all about the Soy Sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.
This sounds like the kind of plot you would expect from a guy who also wrote a book called “This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don’t Touch It”. Check out the trailer for “John Dies at the End” below.
