I’ll admit it, I love the “Sniper” movie series. It started with 1993’s “Sniper”, the only entry in the franchise that made it to the big screen, starring Tom Berenger as a badass Marine sniper, and Billy Zane as his protege. There were some awesome camo action in that one. Part 2, made 10 years later went straight to DVD and had its moments, and best of all, it still had Tom Berenger as ace sniper Thomas Beckett, so it was all good. Part 3, made two years after part 2, once again still had Beckett, but our hero was getting on in years in that one. So apparently somewhere between parts 1 and 3 Beckett went and had himself a kid, though I don’t recall the tyke’s existence ever having come up in any of the three movies, though admittedly, it’s been nearly 7 years since part 3.
In any case, there’s a new “Sniper” entry in 2011, this one called “Sniper: Reloaded”, and apparently they couldn’t get Tom Berenger to reprise the role of Beckett. They did manage to get Billy Zane back, though, and in Beckett’s stead, they have … Beckett Jr. Except Beckett Jr. is all grown up and following in dad’s footsteps, and played by Chad Michael Collins.
While working with the UN Forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Marine Sgt. Brandon Beckett (Chad Michael Collins), son of renowned sniper Thomas Beckett, receives orders to rescue a European farmer trapped in the middle of hostile rebel territory. When he and his men arrive at the farm, a mysterious sniper ambushes them, wounding Beckett and killing everyone else. With the help of his father’s former protégé, sniper instructor Richard Miller (Billy Zane), Beckett must learn to think like a sniper to track down the assassin before the sniper returns to finish the job.
The sequel snuck up on me, and I didn’t hear about it until now. No surprise, then, that the film is going direct-to-DVD, and is due out later this month on April 26, 2011 on DVD and Blu-ray. Check out a trailer for it below.
