I think it sucks that Mel turned it down. It could have been somewhat of a comeback role for him. At the same time, as a Mad Max story fan, I am kind of glad Millers doing a 4th. It was always his story in the first place and I always wanted to see it finished. Closure…come on Mel.

If the story is set 20 or so years beyond what happened in Thunderdome then Mel is the correct age for what Max should be, which is about 60.
If it’s a re-boot of the franchise and is set in between MM1 and MM2 then a younger actor is warranted, say someone no more than 30.
That rules out Steve Innes who is forty, Sam Worthington, who is thirty three and Jeremy Renner, who is thirty two.
All these guys bear more than a passing resemblance to younger/middle aged Mel and would be great in the role, so I hope at least they are all in the film.
Not being from there, I seriously can’t think of another younger Aussie act
or who can fill these boots.
To young, too old or not in Australia at all anymore, so probably an import is the best option.
At least he’ll be a fresh face.

I’m sure people felt the same way about replacing Sean Connery as Bond, and yet 22 films later they’re still chugging. Mel WAS Mad Max. It was what pretty much started his career. But since then he’s moved on to bigger things, and I for one would loathe to see him as Max all grey haired and replaced by stunt doubles for the action. I’m sorry the man has moved passed his primeto play this particular character. Great actor, good director, but let him leave Mad Max in the post-apocolyptic dust. And if he is in it it should be like him having a flashback, where he plays a much older Max, and Tom Hardy (who has been cast and actually bears a slight resembelance to young Gibson) plays young Max.

It’s just stupid replacing Mel Gibson the movie without him is nothing at all, it doesnt matter how old he is he makes Mad Max who Mad Max is. The movie will die and crumble just as The Mummy did when they replaced Evelyn. Miller would be very stupid indeed to continue filming without Mel Gibson starring as Max.

I’ll watch a Mad Max without Mel. I watched one without much to do with cars (Beyond Thunderdome)… so how much worse can it be? Thank goodness it’s not a failed series of prequels. Mad Max episodes I-III anyone? No thanks! lol

Yes, it’s true. Mel Gibson will not be playing Max Payne in the sequel to “Max Payne”. Also, Mark Wahlberg will not be portraying Max Rockatansky in the upcoming installment of the “Mad Max” franchise.

Seems that Gibson has also turned down sequels to “The Basketball Diaries,” “Boogie Nights,” “The Departed,” “Four Brothers,” “The Happening,” “The Perfect Storm,” “Shooter,” “We Own The Night” and “The Yards”. Still no confirmation as to whether he’ll appear in “The Brazilian Job” or not.

But, you don’t have to take my word for it. Just log on to the internet cafe, surfe, and find out for yourself.

Well,..I love Max Rockatanski(got that spelling from the Mad Max Wiki) as well as anyone here,,..and normally,I would be with anyone here.NOOOO!! However,I know the actor slated to take Mel’s place,and he is incredible.This really makes me happy,..to see new life breathed into a great series,..with an actor that I would watch in anything he does.Some actors can make a role really shine,though the movie itself be a waste.They can make it worth watching,and Tom Hardy does that with every role given to him. And,it’s Ton Hardy who will take Max into a new generation.Honestly,..Mel really IS too old for this,guys.So,please,..give Tom a chance,cos I tell you now that he will make the grade.

I think by now (Aug 2009) all the main questions have been answered.

Production has returned to Australia, with a slashed budget of AUD $50 million.

Filming has not yet started nor locations, nor cast (apart from Max) announced and the 2002 footage from Namibia will not be used.

Aussie actor Steve Innes is pretty much confirmed as Max but American actor Jeremy Renner and a few other non-Aussies have also expressed their interest in being Max – I wonder what weight their claims will hold?

What is not known is what the movie is going to be about?

I’ve never seen a synopsis or script and apart from the above you, just don[’t hear or see much about this movie in the media.

Andrew, where will Max find an interceptor, or fuel, to drive?
MMIV is supposed to be set about 20 years after MMIII, so it’s close to 40 years since the events of MMI and the soon to follow nuclear war and collapse of society ect.
I serously doubt there will be useable roads, let alone a working vehicle with fuel, or will Max miraculously stumble upon a sealed underground military installation filled with XBGT Coupe Interceptors and abundant police leathers and fuel?
Sorry,Max’s action is going to be on camel back, donkey back, horse back or on foot, realistically.
May as well just re-do The Postman.

Not really suprised to see a year later that this movie is still being speculated and rumoured about.
We know Mel Gibson won’t be back, no matter how much money (god knows he needs it now) they throw at him and irrespective of the fact that Mel is still the only real choice and is actually not too old at all, given Max is supposed to be over 50 years old in the current (pretty lame) synopsis.
And what’s this nonsense about 30 something old Jeremy Renner being considered for the new Max?
Renner is way too young and too not-Australian but admittedly he was O.K. in The Hurt Locker.
It’s well known that even at this early stage that Steve Innes is the front runner for Max, especially after the recent media frenzy following the leak of his awesome audition and screentest footage to YouTube and Ebaums and the sudden pulling of the videos at the order of the Kennedy Miller group, citing confidentiality breach.
George Miller should really just simplify thing by hiring Gibson – at any cost and offering Innes some other substantial role.
No more talk about Renner, Worthington, Bana, blah, blah, blah….just get the damn movie made (in Aostralia, not F#@%ing Namibia) already!

I think that the first two Mad Max movies were excellent. I haven’t seen anything quite like them. The third however, lacked the same ‘feel’ as them. Perhaps he took the character far enough? Anyway, having Tina Turner in the movie was a BIG mistake. How could anybody take the movie seriously with her in it?! Miller shouldn’t make the next Mad Max without Mel Gibson being the leading Road Warrior. He should go back to his roots and find Mel a cool ‘interceptor’ car to drive. It’s a fast paced road movie for gods sake…and don’t kill the car this time!!!! Kill Mel’s character, but not the car!!!

Hmmmm……I think a fourth Mad Max film could be a disaster anyway. I would rather see a completely new movie then that way if it does go Tits up it would have little or nothing to do with its Predecessor. If I look at the ‘Omega Man’ for example and the Modern day remake ‘I am Legend’ I know which one I profur and I am happy that they maintained individual identities. I think the idea of following the storyline with Mad Max’s son sounds terrible (Indiana Jones) and to be honest im not sure if Mel Gibson would be right for the role anymore. Think how dissapointed you would be if Mel Gibson starred in a shit remake, I’d rather the movie have as little to do with the originals as possible. That way if the movie is crap we can brush it under the carpet or if its brilliant we can all say what a fantastic revival of an original classic.

Hmmm, my jury’s out about Fury Road. So what if Gibson is old; what does George Miller think, that Max wouldn’t age? Trying to keep him young just isn’t believeable. I’m curious to see the plot. Mad Max, The Road Warrior and Thunderdome all took place in that post apocolyptic period, yet each was different and interesting. Sure the character was the same, but so too was Michael Corleone in the three Godfather movies and no one complained. And Gibson has done enough work since Thunderdome to be long seperated from the role, and therefore not type cast. It’s a shame not to see him back for no good reason. I see Robert Downey junior’s name mentioned as part of the cast, but as Max I wonder? He’s edgy enough, has a solid body of work under his belt and really gets into his roles. He’s got that weathered Max-look now too. I think he can pull it off as long as he keeps the witicisms in check.
