Mad Max Fury Road Casting: Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are Official

Out with Mel Gibson, and in with … Tom Hardy? Who the hell is Tom Hardy? Well, sci-fi fans might remember Hardy as the Young Jean-Luc Picard in the “Star Trek” movie “Nemesis”, though he’s since gone on to do numerous other movies, including bulking up for “Bronson” (below), and now he’s set to play Max Rockatansky in George Miller’s “Mad Max 4: Fury Road”. Word is that the story for “Fury Road” will take place just after the events of 1985’s “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”, which would mean Miller is intent on continuing the story instead of rebooting it as originally feared, and Max would still reasonably be a young man and not some old fart.

Besides Hardy, the official cast also includes Charlize Theron as the film’s female lead, though there’s no information about her character beyond that. If Theron’s character does end up being a damsel-in-distress in need of saving, it won’t exactly be her first time in the role. She played a similar character in John Hillcoat’s upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller “The Road”. Though if the role required her to get physical, she’s already demonstrated she can do that, too, albeit in the poorly received “Aeon Flux”. Although, who didn’t love Virginia Hey’s white-clad Warrior Woman from “Mad Max”? Theron would look good in white…

Miller will shoot the sequel next summer in his native Australia, and Warner Bros. will distribute when it’s done.

And so, the “Mad Max” franchise continues on, minus Mel Gibson…

Yup, same guy. Tom Hardy takes his roles seriously.
