Maria Bello Replaces Rachel Weisz in Mummy 3

Variety reports that actress Maria Bello has officially replaced Rachel Weisz for the upcoming “Mummy 3″ movie. She’ll be joining the returning Brendan Fraser, who has starred in all three “Mummy” films, and newcomer Luke Ford, who will be playing the couple’s teenage son, and whose character is expected to carry on the “Mummy” films post-”Mummy 3″. Also in the cast is Jet Li in his second villainous role (both for Hollywood, curiously), and Michelle Yeoh.

Bello will play Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, the adventuress played in the first two films by Weisz. After Weisz declined to reprise, Cohen and the studio cast a wide net for a replacement.

Scripted by “Smallville” creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the film brings the O’Connells and their full-grown son (Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

The film will be directed by Rob Cohen (“The Fast and the Furious”), and Egyptian mummies will be replaced by Chinese ones, hence the casting of Li and Yeoh.

Maria Bello’s films include “Payback”, “A History of Violence”, and “Flicka”. In 2007 she can also be seen in “Butterfly on a Wheel”, “The Jane Austen Book Club”, “Downloading Nancy”, and “Nothing is Private”. The woman likes to work, if you can’t already tell.

Rachel Weisz IS Evy…how can they try to replace her? Replacing set characters just pisses audiences off. I’m gonna hate this movie cause I’ll want Rachel there. Maria Bello doesnt even look close to Rachel. They could’ve at least tried to find a better match. So far everything I’ve heard about this movie makes me think it’ll flop…which is sad cause I love the first and second one.

I couldn’t agree with you more, I loved the first two. Their chemistry was great. I’ll probably go burn my money anyway though. They should have asked Kate Beckinsale.

When I first watched Rachel Weiss portray her character in the Mummy and The Mummy Returns, I am like wow. The reason for that wow factor is the chemistry between Brendan and Rachel. In all my life besides watching films, Brendan and Rachel had a terrific bond throughout the movies. It is like they completed each other perfectly.
When Maria Bello portrayed Evie, it felt so disappointing. She has no Evie spark within her. Also her chemistry with Brendan was extremely poor, especially her lame English accent.
I am not saying she is a bad actress, it is just that she does not fit the role of Evie at all. She seems to masculine for the smart, yet tough Evie. Bello has the tough Evie but not the intellect nor the chemistry with any of the characters. Bellos relationship with Brendan seemed too forced.
