The story of Rome’s Julius Caesar done “Batman Begins” style? That’s apparently the pitch for the new movie “The Roman” that got Mark Wahlberg to sign on as a producer.
Written by Travis Baker and Richard Tanne, “The Roman” will “[envision] the future dictator as a young general in the Roman army in a rarely discussed period of his life. Kidnapped by Cilician pirates and enslaved on their prison island, Caesar escapes with his men, and the decisions he makes during this time directly affect the political and social upheaval happening in Rome.”
So when does he put on a bat costume and fight crime? And do the Cilician pirates teach him kung fu? Man, I’m confused. Also, who’s playing the crusading and very cute Assistant District Attorney?
“The Roman” is just in the developmental stages at the moment, so who knows if it’ll ever actually get off the ground. Movie stars like Wahlberg sign on to “produce” dozens of movies a year, and most of them never get made. See Leonardo DiCaprio.
Starz recently did a little re-imagining of Julius Caesar as a Roman soldier themselves in the third season of “Spartacus: War of the Damned”. Played by Todd Lasance, there was talk that they were going to spin the character off into his own TV show, but there has been no follow-through on that front as far as I know.
