In the upcoming Antoine Fuqua-directed big-screen adaptation of “The Equalizer”, Denzel Washington will play a former CIA killer who has retired to a life of loneliness, reading books, drinking in coffee shops, and working at the Home Depot. Then Russian pimps get under his skin and it’s asskicking time. Watch out, Russian pimps!
New Zealand actor Marton Csokas (Celeborn from the “The Lord of the Rings” films) has now joined the cast of “The Equalizer” as the film’s villain, described as “a vicious fixer for the Russian” mob.
Besides the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Csokas was also in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (though he’d probably love you to forget about this one), and will be playing Damian Lord in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” (a potentially more memorable role — or at least, compared to “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”).
“The Equalizer” will also co-star Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl in the “Kick-Ass” films) as a young prostitute with a heart of gold who befriends the lonely Robert McCall (Washington’s character). When Moretz’s pros gets in trouble with her pimp, McCall hops into action, essentially jump-starting a second career in vigilantism. Hey, a retired old guy’s gotta have hobbies, am I right?
Of course, Washington won’t look like your average “old retiree”, Home Depot vest notwithstanding. It’s Denzel Frakkin’ Washington, for God’s sake. This is one old retiree who will be swaggering like crazy around the Home Depot aisles.
Fuqua, who previously directed Washington on “Training Day”, will do the honors behind the camera for Sony, with the film expected to shoot sometime this Summer.
