Marvel’s smallest superhero Ant-Man will be hitting theaters in a big way on July 31, 2015, and he will be officially played by Paul Rudd.
The studio has made the casting official, releasing a statement from Marvel Prez Kevin Feige, who sounds pretty jazz about the whole thing:
When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.
Rudd is certainly an odd choice — but one that fits perfectly with Marvel’s out-of-left-field hirings. Remember when they set Shakespeare guy Kenneth Branagh to direct “Thor”? And who in their right mind thought Robert Downey Jr. was going to be as good as Iron Man as he turned out to be?
For the longest time there, Rudd played nothing but smartass best friend roles. He’s only recently entered leading man status, and now he can add superhero to his CV.
