I guess Thanos will just have to take a back seat. For a while, anyway. Despite being teased as the next Big Bad in Marvel’s ever-expanding cinematic universe, it appears the villain of Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers 2″ will instead be an artificial intelligence/robot menace called Ultron.
Marvel confirmed Ultron’s villainy by sending over the official title treatment above.
So who is Ultron? According to Marvel:
Arguably the greatest and certainly the most horrific creation of scientific genius Dr. Henry Pym, Ultron is a criminally insane rogue sentient robot dedicated to conquest and the extermination of humanity.
Sentient machines. When will we ever learn? Nothing, and I mean, nothing good ever comes from giving machines intelligence. Oh, humanity.
The character was created by Hank Pym aka Ant-Man, who is a founding member of The Avengers, and is the subject of Edgar Wright’s upcoming movie “Ant-Man”. My guess is that Marvel will tie the two movies, though it’s interesting to note that “The Avengers” will open first on May 1, 2015, followed by “Ant-Man” in November of the same year.
Does that mean the events of “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” will lead into the events of “Ant-Man”? I guess we’ll find out in 2015. Oh, who are we kidding. We’ll find out before then. I’m sure some fanboy site will crack the connections soon enough.
It’s interesting that Thanos is being pushed back, though, especially with “Guardians of the Galaxy” coming out in 2014. From everything I’ve read, he is NOT the main villain of “Guardians”. So is he being saved for a REALLY big throwdown with the Marvel heroes in, say, “The Avengers 3″ and beyond?
Curiouser and curiouser…
