POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Sony has already greenlit not one, but two more “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies, setting the sequels for 2016 and 2018, respectively.
So what does that mean for the cast and crew? Well for Shailene Woodley, who is playing Mary Jane Watson in the rebooted franchise, it means her character won’t be making an appearance in the upcoming second part despite the fact that she has already shot scenes for it. Instead, Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson will now be saved for future installments — notably part 3 and of course part 4 as well, considering, how important Mary Jane is to Spider-Mans life (and future).
Woodley, who is being set up as Hollywood’s next “It” girl (she’s basically doing the Jennifer Lawrence route at this point, with a comic book movie and as the lead in a YA movie franchise-in-the-making called “Divergent” coming out next year), confirmed that her character had been pushed back to “The Amazing Spider-Man 3″ in an email with EW (via Hypable):
Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.
I am assuming there will be more about this in the upcoming EW issue that features Woodley on the cover with her “Divergent” co-star Theo James (below).
As for not introducing Mary Jane until the third part, that’s probably a good idea. The sequel already feels too crammed with important characters (especially the villains), keeping things relatively uncluttered in Spidey’s personal life might be the way to go. And Spidey’s definitely going to need a shoulder to lean on in the coming installments, we suspect.
The now-Mary Jane-less “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ opens April 17, 2014.
Meanwhile, there are rumors that Felicity Jones, who has an unknown role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″, might be playing Felicia Hardy. Here’s Jones talking about her role and trying desperately to dodge the question if she’s playing Hardy aka The Black Cat, another one of Spider-Man’s lovers, when the interviewer brings it up out of the blue (via Flicks and the City):
Sounds like a Yes to me, especially since she’s pretending like she doesn’t know who she’s playing.
If true, it’s no wonder they’re pushing Mary Jane Watson into the third movie. Spidey’s REALLY got his hands full in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ (not just from the villains, but from the ladies as well) from the sounds of it.
