“Cloverfield’s” Matt Reeves took over directing duties on the sequel to Fox’s “Planet of the Apes” reboot last year when original director Rupert Wyatt bailed, and it looks like the director will remain onboard, with the trades reporting that he’s has already signed on to helm the third movie even before the sequel opens.
Wyatt’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was a hit for Fox, who quickly greenlit a sequel that Wyatt didn’t feel like he could properly direct, and moved on as a reslt. Reeves, coming off the “Let Me In” remake, took over, and apparently the studio is happy with their replacement director.
The sequel opens this July 11th, and finds humanity on the verge of extinction under the smart ape assault. It stars Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPhee, with Andy Serkis once again playing smartest ape Caesar.
No word on the plot of the third movie, or what it’ll be called, but given the pattern of the last two films, I’m guessing it’ll be something like “Twilight of the Planet of the Apes” or “Countdown to Another Clunky Ape Title.”
In any case, here’s what to expect from the ape revolution via “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”:
