Matthew McConaughey is … Captain America???

Comic Book Movie News, The First Avenger: Captain America (2011) Movie — By Nix on May 6, 2008

Before we get to the potentially ridiculous news of Matthew McConaughey even being considered to play the role of Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming “The First Avenger: Captain America”, let me just say this: if not for Marvel Studios, who are still not yet fully entrenched in the ways of Hollywood, I don’t think a Captain America movie would have been possible. Hollywood just doesn’t have the stomach to promote America in a good light, and let’s face it, a Captain America movie would do just that. So Thank God for Marvel, because even if the world can’t get behind a Captain America movie, Americans will still go see this thing in droves.

And now, on to the rumor that Matthew McConaughey is being eyed for Captain America via the boys over at Cinema Blend:

One of our long time scoopers dropped us a message tonight to let me know that Matthew McConaughey may be one of Marvel’s leading candidates to slip into Cap’s red white and blue underpants. Our source is a reliable one, but at this point it’s still very early and he’s only one of the actor’s they are considering for the role.

Oftentimes shirtless, narcissistic hippie slacker to play patriotic, uber American Captain America? The horror, the horror…

Matthew McConaughey as Captain America?

He looks like a Captain America type to me…I mean look at the shape the guy is in. Who else are you gonna get?

  • Brad L. Wooldridge says:

“Narcissistic?” Why? Because he doesn’t wear a shirt sometimes? Jesus, if I looked like that, I’d never wear a shirt.

You asked and then answered your own question. Well done!

McCanaughey maybe okay, but I think that pro-wrestler John Cena or Thomas Jane (yes even though he was the Punisher) would be better. I just can’t imagine Cap with McCanaughey’s accent.

  • Rose says:

he’s a good actor, so i think it will be a huge success -beside- i have frenz dying to see this movie already lol

  • Mercutioh says:

There are so many actors that would be better to play Cap than McCanaughey. I like him as an actor but just not as Cap. People have to remember that Cap was a skinny 19 year old kid before taking the super soldier serum ( i know Nerd alert!) I think that an unknown might be the best bet here but if it had to be someone who is an already known actor, I’d go with Ryan Gosling. He’s already done the action genre and he’s a hell of an actor. Plus no drawl.

I agree with Ryan Gosling. Can pull off scrawny kid, but actually was decently built in “The Notebook.” He’s 6′1″, and I think he could bulk up for the role as well. Plus he’s 28, not 38 like McConaughey

  • Matt says:

“Hippy Matthew” playing “Heroic Cappy” would be a typical casting error to just further the foreshadowing of another comic book hero flopping at the box office. Have we not had enough of this?
Cappy was around in WWII… Lets take a look at an older more seasoned actor.
How about Bruce Willis? I think that he could easily pull off the roll. Another possible might be George Clooney. But that is if he is not tied up with the whole “A-Team” Movie.

  • Amos says:

Did casting directors learn nothing from the Ben Ass-fleck/Daredevil disaster? Hell, even he would be a better Cap than McConau-Gay.

  • If anyone casts Ben “ass-fleck” (that was hilarious) as the Capt then they need to throw themselves on their sword.

You get one chance to do this right. Matt’s not a bad choice you could really see him getting into the character. Capt America general gets whooped up on pretty good before dishing it out so you need a character that can show pain. The one character I think looks the part even with out the head piece is Aaron Eckhart..he played Harvey Dent in the Dark night. He completely looks the part.

For that matter so doe Thomas Jane (the Punisher). Both All-american guys, fit and have played the the super-hero films before.

Aaron Eckhart!!! Excellent choice for the role of Cappy. I also like the idea of John Cena. Matthew M. is a terrible choice with that terrible accent sheesh!!
