Entertainment Weekly currently has a story that says Matthew McConaughey (pictured, below) has been offered the title role in Universal’s planned big-screen movie version of the TV show Magnum P.I. The show originally starred Tom Selleck (pictured, left in the role) as a former Vietnam vet and Navy SEALs who becomes a private dick in Hawaii, all the while driving around town in a Ferrari, living in a big friggin’ mansion, and making life miserable for a stodgy British dude in camo shorts. Word is that the Shirtless One is currently mulling over the offer by reading the script by writer/director Rawson Thurber (“Dodgeball”).

How about this for perfect casting: EW.com has learned that Matthew McConaughey has been offered the role of Thomas Magnum in Universal Pictures’ adaptation of Magnum P.I., based on the successful ’80s television show that starred Tom Selleck. The character, a former Navy Seal turned reluctant detective, seems a sweet match for the laid-back actor. McConaughey, we’re told, is reading the script from writer/director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) and will decide shortly.
If this story is true, and I have no doubt that it probably is, I’m pretty sure Matthew McConaughey will say Yes to the role. It seems like the kind of thing the guy would do. Heck, he’d get to shoot in Hawaii, and you know what that means — more chances to walk around the beach soaking wet and shirtless!
Sigh. Dude, put on a shirt, you’re making the rest of us mortal men feel inadequate.
