Matthew Vaughn No Longer Directing Thor

Comic Book Movie News, Thor (2011) Movie — By Nix on May 8, 2008

Well this is interesting news. When Marvel Studios, buoyed by their massive “Iron Man” box office take was announcing their future slate earlier this week, this story showed up in The Hollywood Reporter but not a whole lot of people noticed a very important line about halfway into the article. What’s so interesting about it? It mentions that Matthew Vaughn, long attached to the “Thor” movie, is no longer attached to direct.

Here’s THR with the news:

“Thor” will be released about six weeks after “Iron Man 2,” and Marvel is waiting for a script polish from scribe Mark Protosevich (”I Am Legend”). Matthew Vaughn no longer is attached to direct the project because his holding deal expired December.

“It’s very much a Marvel superhero story but against the backdrop of nothing you’ve seen before,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in describing “Thor” as a period fantasy in the vein of “The Lord of the Rings.”

That is very interesting, indeed. I guess Marvel just didn’t like Vaughn’s ideas on how to approach the movie. He was talking about doing the whole Asgard thing. Also, maybe this is why Vaughn has already shifted his attention over to making Mark Millar’s “Kick Ass”, perhaps?

(Thanks to Rob for the heads up.)

Update 5/11/08:

Previously, Kevin McKidd was rumored to be up for the role of Thor. That has gone by the way side. And now who is the front runner? According to Latino Review, it’s none other than Brad Pitt.

Well, who will take it now?

So, aside from needing a new director, are there any talks about WHO Marvel wants to portray the God of Thunder? I’m thinking that Triple H from WWE would be great, and he already has a Marvel film on his resume (Blade: Trinity)… He could definitely pull off the mythical Norse Warrior/God look… I actually had hoped he might get the part for a Conan the Barbarian re-launch, but I think I would rather see him as Thor, especially now that we know Nick Fury has “The Avenger Initiative” planned in the Marvel Movie Universe!

I read today that WWE’s HHH is now the lead canidate to play THOR. I sure hope so HHH kicked ass in Blade: Trinity…. He’s a badass and this could launch him into movie stardom…Thor’s gonna be huge

  • Zhiro says:

HHH would be a terrible choice for the lead role. his acting in Blade Trinity was laughable at best. i hope marvel continues what they started with Iron Man by casting great actors and puting out the highest quality film they can

  • French Arbitor says:

I’ve watched HHH too long to expect anything good out of him as an actor. He has his moments, but the tend to be either comedy or anger driven. I not thrilled about rumours of Brad Pitt playing the role either. The Odinson is going to need a strong character actor that also fits the size one would expect of a Norse God. I’d have to think casting crews should look to the scandanavian countries to find an “unknown” in North America’s eyes, and use well known others as a supporting cast. I can actually envision HHH as Odin himself though. I think that could be done.

I think Viggo Mortensen would make a great Thor. He has the power in his face and he’s such a versatile actor. Or even Daniel Craig with his stone blue eyes. Ahh a younger actor Hayden Christensen could even pull it off. But any of these guys would need some serious hard training to get into shape for the look of Thor…steroids even jk jk.
And lastly Martin Henderson. Hopefully anyone making this movie takes these into consideration on there search for Thor.
