McFarlane Promies a Moderately Budgeted, R-Rated Spawn Movie

Todd McFarlane is adamant that he’s going to make his version of “Spawn” come hell or high water, and you gotta admire that kind of commitment. The comic book artist/writer turned toyline wunderkind tells MTV that the reason he’s going with a small, $5-million dollar-ish budget for his version of “Spawn” is to avoid having to deal with big studio bigwigs that will want a PG-13 rating from him. McFarlane ain’t gonna go for that.

“The reason I want to go small with it is that it’s a completely R-rated movie. If I sell it up big, studios want that PG-13. They’re a little bit gun-shy with ‘Watchmen’ not doing the numbers they’d like. But I’ve met people who make $5 million dollar movies for a living, and they walk around with the biggest grins on their faces.”

According to McFarlane, he’s still banging out the script, and seems certain he’ll have it done soon enough. As previously reported, McFarlane is looking to go low-tech with his “Spawn” movie, giving it more of an urban vigilante feel with Spawn kept in the background for much of the movie.

How that’ll work out remains to be seen. After all, a Spawn movie where Spawn isn’t the focus? Could that possibly work?

Wait, this is my movie, and I'm in the background? What a gyp.

Nobody reads “Spawn” anymore, it´s just a boring mess. And damn sure nobody gives a crap about a “Spawn”-movie without that supernatural background and none or cheap FX. But hell, maybe Uwe Boll got a few days off and can shoot it in his backyard???

    • Needle

Actually Spawn is the only comic book worth reading besides, Blackest Night and a few marvel books like umm Agents of Atlas. Spawn Endgame is one of the best comics out right now.

Joe, me and you gotta talk man. While I agree that no one watches Spawn anymore other than the old hbo series, It is never appropriate to mention a “at one time” creative IP, in the same sentence as Ewe Boll! As a matter o fact, No one should ever even bring up Ewe Boll if it hasn’t already been mentioned. Spawn may be out of its prime, but a good film could rejuvenate the character, and more importantly we could get a very good and heavy gritty film. No speak of Ewe Boll….Ever again. Hahaha.

HELL YEAH. Ewe Boll=The Devil. I’m still wondering why ANY videogame company would let them touch their properties. I mean really! AFter all the clusterfuck movies he’s done with “In the Name of the King: A Dragon Siege Tale” being the best and it sucked pretty bad. No, definitely not allowed to invoke the devil here.

I would recommend Actor Henry Simmons to Star as The Main Character Al Simmons. The Resemblance is Uncanny.
